Dear BPLers:

I'm thinking about using a regular RidgeRest and a regular ProLite Plus, and for my very warm blooded non-outdoor dog, I am bringing a short RidgeRest and a short ProLite (non-plus). This is basically all I have to work with currently. Do you think we'll be warm enough snow camping? We are located in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. I was also thinking I could bring a thermal blanket that I have.

Let me know if I should post this thread in a different area; I'm fairly new to posting stuff.

PS: My dog is a Lab/Dane mix, no undercoat, tall and skinny, and weighs about 95 pounds. When I cuddle with her my head and her butt match, I'm 5'8''.

PSS: We have a 0 degree F and a 20F quilt that we'll be using.

The Prolite Plus and Ridgerest will give a combined R value of 6.4, which beats the inflatable winter pads like XTherm (R5.7) and Downmat UL7 (R5.9). The regular Prolite and Ridgerest will give a combined R4.8, which falls between three and four season standards but should be ok down to high single digit temps. Consider adding a mylar sheet underneath the bottom pad if Kona gets cool.

Will you layer the two quilts on top of the both of you, or fold the 20F in half to double the insulation for Kona?

The other thing to bear in mind is site selection. Snow is more insulative than bare frozen ground. Pine duff on top of snow is even better.

Give it a try somewhere that you can bail out easily enough if conditions get uncomfortable.

Good to hear, JP. This helps put my mind as ease. Kona have a fleece dog jacket, and if it's really wet she also has a rain coat. Kona also will use my Montbell down jacket and any additional clothes that I'm not using will be laid over here.
