Duel use or a bad idea?

Was thinking how nice one of those light weight 6-8 oz hammocks for lounging around in the daytime might be put to use for double duty at night as a tarp.

I have no experience with hammocks and it is possible that I might even accidentally strangle myself while trying to set one up or get into one….

Wiser minds can ponder if this could work.

Tony, you can create a hammock with a tarp by gathering the ends together, tying it down, and they tie off to a tree.
Just make sure it can hold your weight before doing that.

Most (if not all; I seem to remember at least one hammock designed to do dual use as a ground bivy above treeline) commercially produced hammocks are made of breathable nylon or polyester. This makes them rather unsuitable for use as a tarp.

You COULD make an hammock out of silnylon, but you'd have to unwhip and rewhip the ends every time you went from tarp mode to hammock mode. It'd also be a fairly narrow, long tarp; most hammocks are 60" wide or so and 10.5' to 11' long. It would also likely have condensation issues; due to the hammock wrapping around you, any condensation is just going to puddle in the bottom rather than dispersing.

Hope it helps!
