Looking to shore up my needs for a Down Parka. I have been looking between the Marmot Ama Dablam (http://www.rei.com/product/858305/marmot-ama-dablam-down-jacket-mens) or the Mountain Hardwear Kelvinator (http://www.rei.com/product/871690/mountain-hardwear-kelvinator-hooded-down-jacket-mens).

I wanted something that I could easily layer over a few layers when in camp during the winter months, a hood, and something that wouldnt break my bank. It seems to me that one of the big differences is that the Dablam is an 800 fill while the Kelvinator is only 650.

There are only a few reviews out there for both, most of which just talk about the features and not how they worked in the field.

If anyone has any experience with either of these or has another suggestion I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Sigh.

I was expecting a discussion of whether to buy a new Kelvinator refrigerator or to go on a trip to Ama Dablam.

Cheers

I picked up the Kelvinator on sale last year after a Mount Rogers trip where dinner time on the trail was COLD.

Kelvinator was sized big. Which makes it good for layers but drafty when you're not layered. I wish I had sized it down. Also, though it may be obvious the material is fragile. If you walk near any brush, at all you're going to get snags holes that let features out. In an alpine environment this jacket is designed for, this probably isn't an issue, but if you're below treeline you're going to have to wear a rain shell on top to protect it.

I wouldn't recommend wearing a kelvinator near a campfire. You will get small melt holes. that let down out.

I honestly feel warmer in smaller jackets than the kelvinator, such as the Marmot Zeus (I've only tried on in the store). I'm not sure if part of this is just finding a jacket that fits your body type well though.
