Good reminder Roger, I've always carried a compass. Rarely need it but when I need it I NEED it. Examples
1. On the Colorado Trail followed what we thought was the trail then my buddy became more and more convinced we were wrong. I pulled out a topo map and compass and convinced him to keep going, saved us about a 5 mile backtrack to the last trail sign.
2. In Montana we lost our good map and navigated mostly with a compass off two mountains we could identify.
3. In spring snow in Colorado we lost the trail, set a compass bearing and hiked out successfully.
Rodger,
For whatever reason, I get dyslexic when I try to sort this stuff out in my head when I'm tired.
The reason I bought a compass with adjustable declination is to keep things as simple as possible for me when I'm not at my best.

Very handy to find current declination. Declination changes, so older maps can be off by more than 2 degrees.
Edit typo: Can't be misspelling declination in a post about declination
That's a handy site, Bob, Thanks!
