has anyone backpacked the Black Forest trail in Pennsylvania? I recently did the West Rim trail and am currently making plans to thru-hike the Black forest trail next October. I have the guide book and map and I have scoured the internet for any and all info. Would love to hear from someone who has actually hiked it. Thanks..Joe

Lots of up and down, including some long uphills. You cross a decently fast running stream at mile 0 (per the map). Longest stretch without water is from the river to about mile, hmmmm, 8 maybe? Black Forest Inn is a decent place to crash if you're driving a long way, or a nice place to eat after the hike.
One of my favorite trails in PA.
Agreed with all of the above.
It's probably the best place in PA to get in any kind of serious elevation gain in, and the vistas are about as good as you'll get in the state.
If you have the guidebook, you're more than covered, and camping/water are both abundant on the trail. (Parts of it are a little too abundant- people aren't always super clean here, and I ended up backing slowly out of a campsite when I realized that it had more than a dozen dirty diapers strewn about.)
I do think that the map is a useful thing to have- the trail is very well marked (with the exception of a road crossing right before the end), but it's criss-crossed with various other paths and logging roads. I had my knee die on me on my second trip and ended up backtracking out, but I wouldn't have minded knowing where some of those roads went (and if I could get out more quickly.)
