I was wondering if there was a proper way to hang a down jacket. I really don't want to store it in a bin or under the bed so I was looking for an alternative. Thank you.

I think Hangers may compress the down in the shoulder area (but I may be wrong)
I store my good ones in bags and my arountown
one on a wide hanger, but not sure if it makes any difference.

I have always hung mine. I haven't found any issue with down compression over time. There just isn't enough pressure from the weight of the jacket itself.

otherwise itโ€™s in the storage bag with my 5* down sleeping bag. with a forecast of 18*f for tomorrow morning it looks like it may be time to take it out of storage.

My experience matches that above–there's just not enough weight to cause any compression problems by the hanger.

I've been hanging my down jackets on a hanger for years. I use plastic hangers and not the old fashion thin metal wire ones (can you even get those anymore?). I've never noticed the shoulder area compressing. Looking at the jackets in my closet right now, one bought in 2007 and the other in 2008, the shoulder panels look like they are fully lofting. But they are both 9 oz or less in total weight so they aren't exerting a lot of pressure on the hanger..

If you're really concerned about compression in the shoulder areas, I'd recommend getting a set of hangers designed for suit jackets, with the wide ends to distribute the pressure over a larger surface area. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much. Unless it's a fairly burly jacket, I can't imagine there's enough weight on the piece to warrant serious and permanent damage to the down in the shoulder areas.
