REI just sent us this new 20% off coupon code which is valid until November 23rd.

You can get 20% off one full price Item, plus an extra 20% off one REI Outlet Item.

I think the REI membership is well worth the price since you get an annual refund worth 10% of your total purchases and other perks.

My REI membership is the best one-time-only $20 I've ever spent.

Not only do you get 10% cash rebate on all your full-price purchases each year, you also get these dual 20%-off coupons several times a year. Good for 20% off both full-price and also 20% off the already-reduced Outlet items. Only Members get these coupons.

You break even as soon as you first reach $200 in spending. That gets you a $20 rebate check, which is what you paid for lifetime membership. From there on, it's all savings for the rest of your life.

Some people assume the $20 is an 'annual' recurring membership fee. Actually it's a one-time, lifetime membership (for the whole family). Their no-questions-asked return policy is outstanding. And REI is actually a co-op. So it's a good cause.

REI isn't really a co-op in the traditional (eg worker-owned) sense, only that members have [some] voting privileges when it comes to the Board. I've known friends who worked there, and spoke very poorly of their treatment of employees. TLDR; its a corporation that snares a lot of us do-gooder types with its messages of cooperative (and of course its ostensible green mission).

Every year since 1998, FORTUNE magazine has saluted REI as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For” in the country. This recognition is especially meaningful because it’s largely based on anonymous employee feedback provided to the Great Place to Work ® Institute.

I paid $2.00 for my membership…. back when they had only two stores: Berkeley and Seattle…

Just think. Someday there will be somebody here claiming that their REI membership is the best one-time-only $200 that they've ever spent.

My REI membership is turning out to be $20 well spent. I didn't need anything so I used my 20% coupon to order my wife an inflatable pillow that she's had her eye on. It will make a good stocking stuffer.
