Reasons to purchase:
1) You can go Base Jumping without a parachute – just jump in this bag and throw yourself off of a cliff!
2) Even frozen into the side of an Artic Glacier – you will still be working up a good sweat!
3) Never need to get dressed – clothing will just make you sweat more
4) Sell your bed – sleep in this and you'll always be hovering on a mid-air cloud of fluffy softness
5) Sell your car – you will need to use the money to purchase this bag
6) Sell your house – once you zip up, you'll never be able to get back out anyway!
7) There is so much goose in this bag – it will bring about a perpetual feeling of Thanksgiving! (cranberry sauce optional)I laugh every time I see this bag….it truly proves that JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOES'NT MEAN YOU SHOULD…
Nov 6, 2014 at 7:19 pm #2147411If we only we could get the story on why this bag was created…..for whom and for what purpose?
Nov 6, 2014 at 7:31 pm #2147414J P:
So I emailed the seller:
"Curious what your reasons were for ordering a bag with this much goose down? Any ideal what the temp rating is, or how cold have you used it too. Thank you."His response was:
"Selling for a friend, So dunno on the why, temp I would guess down to -150 plus, never been used brand new."Nov 6, 2014 at 7:46 pm #2147416I wonder if that is -150 Celsius or -150 Farenheit?
Nov 6, 2014 at 8:10 pm #2147418The only reason I can think of would be an Antarctica expedition in the middle of winter. But still the lowest temp ever recorded is -135.
Nov 6, 2014 at 8:23 pm #2147423I like it. I think I need it. But the shipping cost kind of put me off, so I'll pass.
Nov 6, 2014 at 8:35 pm #2147426IT SCARES ME. Looks like it is about to explode.
Nov 6, 2014 at 9:23 pm #2147431Still available, wonder why.. $500 cheaper than last time.
Nov 6, 2014 at 10:32 pm #2147442Is that real? No way…photoshop?
If that's real there must be 100 geese out there that are very upset.Nov 6, 2014 at 11:33 pm #2147445"If that's real there must be 100 geese out there that are very upset."
The geese are not really upset, but they are kind of down.

Nov 7, 2014 at 3:04 pm #2147543How exactly can one fully do and undo the zipper from the inside ?
But if you can afford that you might be able to afford an assistant.Nov 7, 2014 at 5:11 pm #2147563AnonymousInactiveGozer: The Choice is made!

They are not upset …. they are hiding in there.
Its like a goose trojan horse. You fall asleep and they come out and peck you to death, dispose of the body and then re-list themselves on E-bay.
Nov 8, 2014 at 3:19 am #2147640Excellent for "cowboy camping" above 8,000m in the Himalaya.
Nov 8, 2014 at 5:16 am #2147644So I got another chuckle out of reading yet again about this "interesting" sleeping bag. Then I got an idea, and maybe others might be interested? If anything, it will be a fun little diversion.
What if a group of us BPL members pool together and buy the damn bag, but what is important is that one or more of the member pool have some solid MYOG experience with down. See where I am going yet?
We buy the bag together, empty out all the down, and use the down to make other bags, jackets, skirts, pants, etc. The person or people that are MYOG skilled don't have to pay into the pool, because they can pay with their skills, and in the end get free supplies to make gear of their choice for themselves. The rest of us in the pool that won't make anything split the cost of the bag, and get gear made for us using the down from this absurd bag in question.
I checked on thru-hiker.com, and a rough calculation using 256oz down that is in the moon bag, it would cost about 3328 USD if we ordered 800 fill down there (without shipping costs). Let's say a group of us could score the bag for 2500 USD, and maybe get lucky and one of us is from PNW and can go and pick the damn thing up rather than pay the insane shipping costs. Best case, sure, but it's not implausible, and a significant savings.
Let's say 20 people chip in 150 bucks, that's 3000 bucks. That covers the bag (in the ideal situation outlined above), plus 500 bucks to buy fabric and such for gear, and maybe cover shipping. Then once the bag gets to the person or people that is good with MYOG, each person that paid into the pool gets to order stuff made using the 11.6oz down (22 people–20 that paid and say two that are sewing the gear–divided by 256oz down) that each person owns. That's a lot of down per person, from what I gather. Depending on your size, that could be from a 40 degree bag for bigger people, to a 20 degree bag for smaller sized people. Or a set of jacket, pants, socks, and gloves–maybe just a very warm/poofy jacket for a big person.
I'd be willing to chip in 150 bucks for some good MYOG 800 fill down gear.
Thoughts? Anyone with me (especially if you live in PWN and are good at sewing!)?
PROJECT RECYCLE MOON BAG?!
EDIT — Also, if we got serious about this and got 20 people together and ponied up the funds, we could contact the seller directly and make them a lower offer perhaps? Like offer 2K and that someone will come and pick it up (assuming we can find someone to go get it)?
EDIT 2 — It just occurred to me that the above deal might be unfair to the person or people sewing the gear? Maybe let them have more of the down/fabric to make gear that they can then sell on gear swap?
Nov 8, 2014 at 5:56 am #2147647Cesar,
I, too, thought of harvesting the down for MYOG, but the cost per ounce would still be too high.
Wildernesslogics.com has great service and sells it for only $8.75/oz. And that's packed in INDIVIDUAL ounce-size packages!
Nov 8, 2014 at 6:31 am #2147648Damn. Ah well, fun to try and calculate something of actual use with this ridiculous moon bag (RMB). Thanks for the feedback, however.
WL is much cheaper, had not heard of them before. I am a bit of a noob when it comes to more involved MYOG projects, so only ever bought through TH and Dutchware, and ever any down.
How about this, then. Let's all keep a collective eye on RMB. If somehow we can buy it for around 2K or lower and get someone to pick it up for us, maybe we could get serious.
Nov 8, 2014 at 9:37 am #2147676The only sensible destiny I can see for this bag…
somebody with some MYOG skills removes the extra down restores it to a regular Snowy Owl. Given the dubious provenance, the fact that it may be overengineered and/or overstressed by this ridiculousness… I doubt that bag is then worth more than $600-$700.200oz of down – if it's available at $8 small-lot retail, for such a huge amount non-returnable second hand, maybe $800.
I think $1500 is the highest price the seller will get for this bag, if they are lucky.
So, Cesar, if you're serious about this, offer $1250 and see what happens. Nobody else seems to be interested.
Nov 8, 2014 at 10:23 am #2147680Yeah, I would be surprised if anyone actually buys this thing.
I think that first we need to see if others here are interested in recycling the RMB. So far only me, Ralph, and Todd seem to be interested in this crazy idea. And I'm not going to shell out like 800-1000 bucks for it.
I like the idea of giving a lower offer and just addressing the big, pink elephant in the room to the seller that this bag is just… it's… you know.
If we can get 10 people to chip in 130 bucks, and one of these people can go and pick it up to save on shipping–then we can make the seller an offer of 1300 bucks just to see what happens. So if you are reading this and are both frugal and a bit crazy, and want in on this, add your name to the list here in this thread:
The Recycle the RMB Project!
Cesar
Todd
RalphAlso, please note if you live in PNW and/or if you are good with sewing!
Nov 8, 2014 at 10:57 am #2147683No, not for me, thanks.
I just wanted to discourage you from paying too much if you really want to do something with this.
Just because some idiot paid $3000 retail for this, does not mean it's a bargain at half the price.Nov 8, 2014 at 11:14 am #2147685Oh, okay Ralph. Sorry about the confusion. I still find it hard to understand how and why someone actually bought this brand new.
If somehow it could be turned into 20 quilts after buying it for half price or lower, each of those quilts would be a bargain!
So looks like it's just me and Todd?
Nov 9, 2014 at 6:32 am #2147815but you'd then need to rent a semi-truck to actually go pick it up…
I wouldn't want that thing in my car……….Nov 9, 2014 at 6:33 am #2147816by the way – did anyone ever get in touch with Feathered Friends to see what their reaction was to this order?? I would have loved to hear THAT conversation…..
Nov 9, 2014 at 7:14 am #2147820This is obviously a guy's bag. Someone who really, really wanted to climb back into the womb…..
