I am so far from a coffee mug expert, but this GSI infinity backpacker mug has been awesome for me for the last couple years, and I haven't seen it mentioned much here, so I thought I'd give it a shout.

I know, strictly speaking you could just not carry a mug, or use something lighter, but there are two reasons this mug stands out as incredibly useful and totally worth the 3.5 oz.

1) You can close it and it'll stay closed. So you basically gain the functionality of having an extra water bottle (17oz ain't bad) for sipping on coffee, water, or a sports drink on the go, or as a food container for storing leftovers. Its a really tight seal, and I've never had an issue with it opening even when upside down, but its also just a quick flip to sip from it. The strap sewn to the cozy also makes it easy to latch to my HMG ice pack (no pockets).

2) It insulates well for the weight. On cold mornings it doesn't take long for a cup of coffee to cool in an open or uninsulated mug. With other mugs, its usually cold by the time I finish it. With this one, I can close it and forget about it while I take down camp, and its still at a good drinking temp when I come back to it. Same goes for food if I don't want to throw a whole meal down at once. It also beats eating out of a bag.

For $10 its easily my favorite inexpensive piece of gear. Super functional.

How does the GSI compare to holding heat like the ubiquitous Alladin 12oz Plastic Mug (you know, the one every truck stop in America carries)?

Granted, they're heavy (5oz's), but man they hold the heat, and at the end of the day that's what an insulated mug is all about… hot drinks from beginning to end.

An empirical test is in order (grin)!

Thanks for the GSI head's-up.

I use this mug as well – it is pretty lightweight and does a great job of keeping my morning coffee warm!

I've tried some other mugs but for the weight this one is really hard to beat.

My husband and I have used these mugs for years. They hold a lot of coffee and keep it hot for a long time. Light and cheap. What's not to like?

While it is not on the GSI web site yet, it appears that the GSI Infinity Backpacker Mug is changing.

MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) has a new version of this mug on their site.
The change is a switch to nylon from neoprene for the cozy.

The MEC site shows the updated mug to be 1 gram lighter than the neoprene version.
Available in Red, Green, or Blue.

My wife and I have also been using this mug camping and backpacking. In fact, we just used them yesterday in Sequoia national forest. It really is a fully-featured mug that is better in just about every way than any of the titanium uber-priced mugs.

I also use this mug, especially for winter trips and I love it also. My drinks stay hotter longer and I like how much it holds .
