All,
Is anyone interested in hiking Humphreys Peak in Arizona on New years day? My plan was to be at the summit before Sunrise so that we could watch the sun rise on New Years Day. If there is snow this year this would involve crampons, and appropriate winter climbing gear (possibly snowshoes if the weather merits it) as Humphreys is 12,637ft and can have up to 100mph winds in the winter.

I really like the idea. I will most likely be in the Grand Canyon, but if not I'll probably be in Flag. I'll let you know. :)
So I spoke to the Ranger office responsible for this area and they said free backcountry permits are needed for this climb in winter. Every person in the party has to be present when they pick up the permit. They also gave me an avalanche website to check and said that the ski resort snow bowl has a run that's at 11,500ft and probably has weather reports closest to the peak. Please keep me posted on where you are. If you live in/near AZ I'm planning on hiking to the peak soon before there is snow to scout the route.
I actually live in Flagstaff, so I look at Humphreys every day – keep me posted!
It just got snow yesterday but it should melt off this week.
Great! I follow the National weather service in Flagstaff on Facebook and Twitter and I have been monitoring the weather in Flagstaff. I was up there literally every weekend this summer. I have yet to find anyone else interested I am hoping to hike Humphrey's on December 6th to get an idea of the route before there is any/much snow and so I have a feel for it in the daytime before we traverse it at night. Would you be interested in this? I am camping up on Kendrick Peak this weekend as well. PM me if you have questions or would like to get my contact info. Thanks!
I always spend New Years at Joshua Tree, otherwise would be interested. It's gonna be freakin' cold up there, good luck.
I'm in Prescott, pretty much in the middle between you and Nicholas. If you guys are ever interested in setting up a trip with the three of us, let me know. It would be cool to meet up with some BPL'ers.
A little Arizona BPL meetup would be fun. I have the 7th-12th off and was thinking of doing something in the canyon, either the Royal Arch Loop or a confluence trip…
I'm down for anything on a weekend as I'm saving vacation for a baby that's on the way. . I've never hiked the canyon before so depending on the difficulty I'm game.
