I have an upcoming business trip to St. Louis in November, and wondered if it would be worthwhile to see if there was a 20-25 mile overnight hike within a 3 hour radius that would be worthy of burning a few days of vacation and a rental car expense. Knowing absolutely nothing about the area, I did a little bit of research and uncovered a few wilderness areas driving SW towards Springfield, and some interesting river areas in the Ozarks.

So my questions: Is this a worthwhile quest? Any recommendations for a good two-day backpacking trip? The average temperatures are about 58 high and 32 low…what about precipitation that time of year?

Thanks for the help!!!

Hey Russell…You can access several sections of the Ozark Trail (OT) within 1.5-2 hours of St. Louis. There are no real loops to speak of…but…you could, on the Taum Sauk section, go from Johnson Shut-Ins/Scours TH on the OT to Bell Mountain…make a loop…backtrack slightly and connect to Goggins Mountain, loop, and exit at the Johnson Shut-Ins campground…about 1/2 mile walk back to the original TH.

See OT maps/info here: http://www.ozarktrail.com

Mark – I reviewed your recommended hike/maps and it seems like a most workable hike. I have your recommendation and about 2 others, so I went ahead and booked my flight with 2.5 days built in for backpacking…something good is certainly going to happen in MO!I really appreciate your help. Thanks – Russ

Hope it works out…generally a great time of year to hike in MO…unseasonably cold tonight with a low of 26 deg…but…should warm back up into the 40's overnight, next week…

Have fun…
