I finally found a local source for Amann Rasant thread and prices are very reasonable. But I have to buy them in bulk. Is anyone else here interested in Rasant thread? I would love to pass on a good deal to interested BPL members and that way I dont have to keep all of them. :)

Prices:
Rasant 75 Black $5 for 1000m. Enough for lots of projects.

Shipping will be only $2 worldwide by registered mail.

My distributer has this item in stock. I can order other colors too if there is enough interest.

For those who dont know about Rasant thread, it is a core spun thread with a polyester core and cotton cover. This combination gives the thread a high breaking resistance and a well-balanced elongation behaviour. It also has a high thermal resistance and low static qualities. These qualities gives it much better performance then gutermann and metrosene plus threads.

Uses: packs or tents. Best for critical seams where you want a slightly heavier thread.

Rasant 75 is Tex 40, so yes, somewhat heavier than the threads commonly recommended around here, but quite suitable for lots of gear.

I'm not a huge fan of Rasant; I don't think it's in any way superior to other cotton-covered core spun. I use coats and A&E cotton covered poly corespun threads, which are easy to find in the US, come in huge range of colors (A&E supply D-core in something like 600 colors from stock; rasant comes in about 100.) They're also much cheaper: I pay about $7 a 5000 m cone.

For gear, I prefer poly-covered polyester core thread, like Coats Epic or A&E permacore. (the Amann equivalent is Saba; it can be found on 1000m spools in the US for reasonable prices) I find they wick less moisture than cotton wrapped threads, and has a bit better strength.

Hi David,

Thanks for sharing your views. I havent used the other threads you have mentioned but its very interesting that you can buy 5000m cone for $7. Can you please provide more details on where to buy it?

I am in India and it has been difficult to find a good quality thread in regular sewing stores. Previously I have bought threads from USA and eBay Australia but its too expensive. TheRainShed has 1000m Metrosene Plus for $9.7 plus shipping and current ebay Australian sellers are charging a ridiculous prices for Rasant. $50 AUD for 3 x 1000m with shipping.

If anyone is looking to buy Rasant at a reasonable cost, you can contact me by PM.

My distributer also has Rasant 120 in stock. This is perfect for ultralight fabrics. Price is same. $5 + $2 shipping.

I buy thread from a supplier of industrial sewing supplies. Anywhere there is any reasonable amount of manufacture has places like that. If I remember correctly, you're in India, which has a thriving textile industry, and a thriving thread manufacturing industry. If your goal is to use a high-quality thread to make stuff, ask your deal what other high quality cotton covered polyester core thread (or polycovered polycore) he has. There's nothing magical about Amann threads; they're good, but so are lots of others.
