I've never camped in the desert but I've camped in a few areas with thorns and spiky plants. Why can't you just check the campsite and clear out anything sharp? Are there small thorns on the ground that are hard to see?

Potentially. Some camp sites are pretty sandy, concealing thorns just under the surface.
