Can anyone make a recommendation for hiking pants for a short women? My girlfriend is about 5'1 and any pants she looks at are way to long and always need to be rolled up which can get annoying.

Several companies make petite or short sizes for less vertically-inclined women, including REI, Prana, Ex Officio, etc.

If those are still too long, have her take them to a local tailor to be hemmed — it's very inexpensive, and totally worth it to have pants that aren't trailing in the dirt!

My wife is small like that and she has found prana to be the best for her.

They need to be rolled up a bit or hemmed but that's easy.

Her main problem was finding the low rise waist

Good luck,
I am 5' tall and have a very short inseam,I have yet to find pants that do not need to be altered.Luckily I can get them altered for free but to be honest I wear shorts and wind pants and find that I haven't had a problem with the length of my wind pants so no altering is needed.I tend to wear shorts year round and I live in the PNW, if it gets really cold I wear fleece pants.

Sewing a hem is ridiculously easy and worth learning how to use a simple machine to do it. Five minutes.

you will most likely need to take them in unless they are super skinny legs in the first place otherwise you will end up with a very wide opening at the ankle, believe me I know.To be done properly they should be taken in first on the outer leg seam(not the inseam)and then taken up to the proper length.

I take most of my pants in and don't mind the wider leg; a lot of pants are getting narrower than I like anyway. The only problem I have is with pants that have a knee gusset.

I am 5'2"

I can't stand stove pipe legs on my pants, not only does it look bad but it makes it easier for mozzies to get in and makes it a bulky and uncomfortable if I want to tuck them into gaters .I prefer properly fitting pants,so I generally stick with shorts with a pair of lightweight breathable wind pants that fit with no altering needed.

I have the same problem on the men's side. I've been able to solve it by buying hiking pants in brands/styles that offer short, medium, and tall lengths. Marmot Cruz and Marmot Scree pants are available in short lengths, which I need to keep from dragging the cuffs in the mud. I even got PreCip rain pants in short. LLBean is also very good at offering different lengths. The only pants I have that aren't Short lengths are some ultralight Essence rain pants and a pair of new LLBEAN NeoShell pants (but those have drawstring cuffs, so they are ugly, but functional.

LL Bean sells petite sizes in hiking pants for women. She may want to check them out. I generally buy petite from them. Pants for hiking don't always have to be the qualified bonified brand names, either. But she would do well with petite sizing.
