I have last years Big Agnes Scout UL2. Since it is no longer my primary tent I feel more at liberty to take some chances at modifying it. I am going to try adding noseemum windows front and back for ventilation. I am also going to add a vestibule in front and a overhang in the back for storm coverage.

Has anyone else altered a BA Scout that can offer tips or suggestions? I searched BPL and did not find any other attempts at such foolishness.

I don't really understand the mod.s you're trying to do (noseeum mesh windows front/back seemed to be standard for the Scout UL2 in the photos I saw of the tent, so is a front vestibule).

I added a see-through vinyl window to the front vestibule rain fly of my BA Fly Creek UL3, carefully seam-sealing all around the new window (2 coats), and it worked out perfectly. So, as long as you seam seal well, I imagine you can do anything you like to BA tents…

The Scout Plus and Super Scout that came out in 2014 have windows. The base Scout that was available in 2013 has no windows so venting is pretty poor.

I will definitely have to seam seal any outer stitching that I do. I have no sewing skills at this time so this will be a crash course. I expect it will be ugly when I'm done but hopefully functional.

You can't see 'ugly' at 2 am in a storm. But you can feel leakages. :-)

I have finished the first mods to my Scout UL2. The front window and vestibule/beak have been added. I also changed out all of the lines and tensioners with Z-line from Zpacks to possibly offset the weight that I have added. The stitching is pretty sloppy but hopefully functional. Five minutes after setting up the tent to take these pictures it started raining so I will find out if it lets water in.

Before mods.

New window.

New vestibule/beak.

Wow! Great job on the window/beak! I'm picking up my UL2 later this afternoon and plan on doing the exact same mods. Did you end up adding a window/beak to the rear of the tent? Have you had an opportunity to test the tent to see if there's a dramatic enough improvement in airflow to make it usable?

Thanks for sharing!!

Donald,
I like what you did here! You will get much more utility from the tent this way.

Good job!

I have not added a window/beak to the back yet, though that is a planned mod.

I have had the tent out on a few winter trips with rain or snow every time, it seems to rain daily in the Smoky Mountains. I can definitely feel better air flow. However, the tent still has a serious issue with condensation.
