I picked up a pair of Komperdell carbon ski poles for cheap. Very light. Seem very strong. In almost new condition. The "almost" involves a few gouges. Nothing super deep and the fibers are not fraying or anything like that, but I'd like to make sure they don't.

There seems to be some kind of coating on them. Anybody know what that is? What's the best way to "fill in" the gouges to keep them from weakening or fraying?

Any info is appreciated!

Most any good clear OUTDOORS varnish.

I wrapped the bottom ends of some of mine with industrial UHMWPE adhesive tape, to take all the metal edges met in skiing accidnets. Lasted well.

The problem with most of these products is they take a long time to dry and during that time they will run. When they run they could build up to the point that the pole section that you are coating may not slide through the lock mechanism.

To mitigate that problem you will need to select something that goes on thin and dries very fast. or maybe hang them vertically and deal with removing the run at the bottom. A spray may work better than brush on.

I have used very fast drying clear finger nail polish to treat small spots successfully.

If you pick a warm, windy, dry day it will dry faster, but could be problematic to spread nicely if it dries too fast.

Might be good to do a test on some similar object.

True, but most ski poles are a single section: they don't collapse.

+1 for clear fingernail polish. It is what our bike shop used for minor touch-up on bike frames.
