I've been searching this site and many others for information about this sleeping bag. It seems to be a marvelous product with little or no information floating around about it. At the moment, these are impossible to find, though the website lists it as available for purchase. The Customer Service folks at MEC (who have continuously amazed me with top-notch assistance) have informed me that there are supply problems, and it won't be available until the end of next October (that's getting late in the season!)

As a yank who can't go by an MEC store, I am desperate for information about this bag. It truly seems to be unique based on the scarce info I've found: lightweight, warm and designed to be tiny in the pack, more so than any other brand I've seen!

Any users out there?

I've never used it, but I've seen it in-store. Keep in mind that it lacks a draft collar, so the only seal between the inside and the night air is around your face. Why they did this I cannot imagine; how much extra could a collar have weighed?

Also, I don't think it has a DWR coating of any kind.

Other than that, it looks like a great bag. MEC has a really good returns policy (like REI in the US) so you can't go wrong if you don't like it.

While I can't comment on the actual bag as I don't own one, I have seen and touched the mythical bag (which now seems to be unavailable along with it's smaller brother). I loooked long and hard at the -10 Merlin, but in the end opted for the WM Versalite as it visually looked and felt warmer (if that makes sense).
On the other hand, MEC house brand is great quality and a bargain compared to the mainstream name brands. I have an MEC down the street from me which I frequent, the service is always great, they stand behind their products, and you can return anything at any time if you are not happy with the product.
So, if you order the bag online, you won't have a problem returning it…even if you try it out for a few nights.
Now, when I was looking for a winter bag, I recall more then one person telling me the Merlin has a funny fabric which sticks to you when you sleep…can't remember the source though, so do some research.

This is good insight! I am pulling my hair out looking for a great low-temp bag that will fit in a teacup (OK, not really… I'd never take a teacup camping!) You guys have given me plenty of food for thought.

Lack of DWR isn't great, but I still think this bag is probably a good choice…

Just to give a little more information, I will offer this: I'm trying to find a great bag for backpacking that I can also stuff into a bike pannier for touring. I am a retro-grouch which means I'm using a frameless Rivendell Jensen pack. I really want a bag that fits in the lower compartment…
