I have been looking for a new down parka and think I may have fond it in the Montbell Frost LIne Parka and was wondering if I have made the right choice and would like a little help.

One of the things I wanted was for the parka to be big enough for my 6’5” 235# frame and I think the XXL will be.

I also wanted the jacket to be box baffled. I know Richard Nisley says that the construction doesn’t matter until you get to about 9oz of down but I know I feel a lot warmer in box baffled jackets versus sewn through ones when they are about the same amount of down added.

I did think about the Mirage also but it has less down and a thinner outer shell. I will be using this jacket while hiking/camping and around town also so I thought the 30d vs 7d was a much better choice. Richard also says that 10d is needed to make a jacket ‘windproof’ and since the only outer jacket I could wear over an XXL parka is a DriDucks XXL rain jacket because it is the only one big enough, I thought it was better to go with the 30d for that reason also. They also don’t have it in XXL. I thought about the Permafrost Parka also but was wary because of the Gore Windstopper material not breathing that much possibly and they also did not have it in XXL. The DWR on each jacket would probably be the same, correct

One thing I would have liked was hydrophobic down but isn’t there a wash in treatment for that also?

And the price of $220 seemed very good.

Please poke holes in this and suggest anything else I should have looked at. Thanks.

You should email or call Montbell and ask them
to measure the Parka in your size, they are always very helpful on the phone
and in store.

According to them it does fit. It would have been nice to find a box baffled jacket using hydrophobic down with a great warranty at a decent price.

It looks like an awesome jacket. Yeah the Mirage is the UL champ, but for the extra 7oz (50%) you get a warmer, longer, cheaper and more durable jacket. It's a pragmatic choice.

Once some online stores get them in stock and someone offers a 20% off coupon there will likely be one headed my way.

Frostline is a nice looking jacket and it's really hard to beat the price. New for this year they shaved off a lot of weight, bringing a medium under 20oz. They're using a 20d instead of 30d liner now. That puts it in the weight and fill of a Rab Infinity, but with box wall and 2/3 the price.

I would say the frostline is a nice piece of kit for anyone based on the stats and to do better requires substantially more cost.

I picked up a Frost Line about a month ago when it was 25% off on Campsaver. I'm really excited to put it to use this winter. Why can't it be winter now?!?

I got one and am not so happy with it. Really not box baffled but rather their box construction. Not that far off from just being sewn through. Going back.

I think Backcountry said it was 2014 but i also called up the Montbell Boulder store and they pulled one off the floor and it was also about 0.25"
