If my math rings true:

Monk Tarp (4.5), BG Argon Bivy (6.25), 8 Toaks V Stakes (3.2), and Zpacks 1.25 (.55) is 14.5oz for a storm worthy bugproof system.

HMG 8×10 (8.5 {no linelocs}), Polycro (1.6), 8 Toaks V Stakes (3.2), 6 Skewers (1.4), and Zpacks 1.25 (.55) is 15.25oz for a storm worthy non-bugproof system.

And it is more versatile than a lighter, less wind resistant cat cut tarp.

I've looked at the cricket, hexamid, patrol etc. I keep coming back to a flat tarp because of its versatility.

I'll never get rid of my Hexamid but I love the simplicity and openness of sleeping under a flat or cat tarp as well.

I agree with Nick (I must be getting old) A big tarp really has a lot of advantages, especially if it rains.

I have the HMG 8 x 10 and I cut off the D-rings and just use Z-packs guy lines (the thicker stuff) and MSR groundhogs.

The groundhogs + guy lines are as heavy as the tarp itself. I find 8'x10' to give very good protection although I carry my Borah bivy too. I've been through five days of rain and stayed dry for the most part under it even though I was digging trenches and diverting rain on several heavy rain nights.

Breakdown:
7.9 oz. tarp
6 oz. guy lines and stakes

Yea… I carry a fairly large (by BPL standards) sheet of tyvek to throw down. It keeps my stuff cleaner and I can find my small items rather than losing them in the dirt/grass.

I'm not going to stress out about a couple ounces though. The HMD is bomber but I wish I'd bought a sil-nylon tarp instead. The cuben is noisy in the rain.

I have decided to go with a HMG 6×8, I've been babied by HMG and I feel loyal to their product. IMO, they have the best construction quality.

I also just procurred a wasatch bivy. As long as I can fit inside of it, my total setup should weigh around 14.65oz.

Thanks to all for the helpful insight.

Take care and happy hiking

Edit: Going to wait to make a decision. The Monk Tarp keeps making the decision difficult!

I own the HMG UltaMid and love it! I do recommend it.

However the other are also great options.

Awesome Kelly. Enjoy your setup and make sure to post up your thoughts on it when you get it.
