supplex mountain shirt

This Mountain Shirt is made from supplex nylon. I wanted a clean, functional design with no bells and whistles. The fabric is breathable, quick drying and offer protection from sun and moderate wind. It has a climbing hood to provide additional warmth when needed. French seam is used throughout the jacket for comfort next to skin. Its has a loose fit in the sleeves for ventilation. Velcro cuffs, bottom hem drawcord, zipper and hood drawcord can be adjusted to retain or dump body heat as needed.

Will post the weight soon! ;)

I have been using RAB Merino long sleeve as my outer layer and I own 2 windshirts – Rab Alpine / Patagonia Houdini. I have found that none of them are very durable pcs. Also the combined system is too warm and not breathable enough for fast summer pursuits in Himalayas.

This stand alone layer will replace the above system for summer climbing. I previously made a long supplex parka and tested it on few himalayan peaks in 2011/12 and it worked very well as the only layer at lower camps. Cooler, more breathable and dries faster then base layer/ wind shirt combo hence more versatile.

I will add RAB Meco only in colder conditions. I am also considering replacing RAB with Aclima Woolnet when it wears out.

Very nice, Huzefa!

Supplex is an awesome material – and at that weight to replace TWO garments, it negates Supplex's sole disadvantage.

4 ply supplex at owfinc.com is 4.4 oz/yd2

2 ply is 3.4 oz/yd2

maybe you made yours with heavier supplex?

maybe Roger's is shorter or smaller around

I tend to make mine baggy, but then it's a little heavier. Probably a base layer doesn't need to be so baggy. A jacket should be baggy to provide enough room for insulation and for better ventilation

Hi Huzefa

Yes indeed: you can get Supplex in different weights. I have fabric from three different sources, and they are all different weights.

The lightest stuff I use in summer. It's good for that, but there is some air flow. The heaviest has been used for 3-month-long overseas trips and for the high mountains. It has less airflow for sure, and is warmer.

Hi Roger,

I have cut a 2yd pc and measured it to be at 3.62oz/yd2. So its likely heavier then the one you used but the difference is quite significant.

I am finding it quite ok in the hot and humid weather here. Will be testing it mountains soon.

I love it so much that I plan to wear it everywhere. :D

Thank you guys for the compliments. Some of my friends have even asked me to make one for them! :)

Hi Huzefa

> I am finding it quite ok in the hot and humid weather here.
I don't think the airflow through the fabric is the only factor. The looseness of the cut is probably more significant. You can control that.

Indeed. The real test will be trekking with backpack since back panel, shoulder straps and hip belt block air circulation underneath the fabric making the it warmer.

That's an awesome shirt! I've just made taslan pants and I am about to embark on making a shirt. If you don't mind me asking, which pattern did you use for this shirt? Or did you draft a pattern yourself?

Thanks :)

congrats on your new taslan pants. i will be making a pair soon!

I used Shelby Abisko pattern as a starting point. Its a nice pattern but it has too many pcs. I wanted something simple so I had to modify it. I made a prototype from cotton first to get it right. This pattern can be purchased from Shelby.fi

You can also take a look at Roger's Pattern. See the link in my earlier post above.

Roger,

I will look into making the zipper longer for my next project. Planning to make a rain pullover jacket.

Thanks for that. I will start with making Roger's shell top but I thought I should investigate other patterns in case the fit doesn't work for me. I modified his pattern for the taslan pants very effectively to have some great-fitting pants. I did have to make a pair in cotton first though.
