In my search for a good couple of pairs of pants for my 3 season adventures I've run across a couple of sites/stores like these:

…just to name one as an example. I can't believe how cheap these wool pants are. Too good to be true? Are pants like these the itchy scratchy wool of yesteryear? Or could these be the real deal?

Brian,

They have a 1-800 phone number. You should have given them a call. Using the phone is easy and you don't even need to pay for the call.

But, in the event you are part of the really small number of folks in the US that does not have a phone or you live outside the US, I made the call for you.

The answer was a very positive – YES. However a light pair of long underwear should solve the problem.

In scouts (in the 80's) we mostly winter camped. We called these pants "German Army Pants" and they were *the* must-have gear item. We all wore them all the time, with our belt knives and Silva compasses and Peak 1 stoves.

I don't think any of us actually knew where the term "German Army Pants" came from, but we all had them and they were awesome. Lots of mobility for walking, lots of warmth for standing around camp, seemingly never staying wet, never getting clammy, and they even shed snow nicely. When I started doing winter outdoors stuff again in my 20's, they were the first thing I thought of. The only reason I don't own a pair now is that I already come off as too much of a hillbilly for west coast sensibilities.

Just like the antique climbing suit used by Hillary being pretty much as good as the best modern equivalent, these pants are an example of old technology that really worked then and really works now!

Brian James,

I have several pair of what the US Army called "OG's" or something like that. OD wool shirt and pants very nice. I wore these a lot but wore the shirt most as a light jacket.

I never had a problem with the wool next to my skin.
