Those who have seen both, or even one, what am I not getting with the Luna while I save 25% ?

The Luna looks to be a few inches bigger and 1oz heavier.

I like and own MLD products, but its $300 vs $390 once I add the inner-net.

Talking Silnylon btw. Cuben is tempting but hundreds of dollars extra for a few ounces isn't in my future.

I've had a luna 2, luna 4..and a MLD supermid, and MLD trailstar.

Bearpaw's weight:…first off, its almost always overspec. By….quite a bit. I'm not sure what happens, but the weight on the site is, by a more than acceptable margin, under weight.

also….I thought it looked kind of sloppy, and I couldn't get as tight of a pitch.

Basically, my opinion of bearpaw is that its "function over form". I'm sure it will work perfectly acceptable for you, but its not the best.

Whereas with my supermid for example….drum tight pitch just about the first time I pitched it.

Now….MLD isn't perfect. Mainly….price. But advertised weights are true (or, are overestimated as is the case of the sil supermid….I've had two that were several ounces less than the website …I think Ron just hasn't updated the official weights on the site recently). Also…I'm not a proponent of the trailstar….too hard to pitch for me…I'm not a fan of moving stakes, which is what I had to constantly do with the trailstar, but I love the supermid. Build quality is outstanding on every MLD piece that has come to my door via the swap.

With MLD, you'll get a shelter that pitches taut. If you plan on using the shelter in wind and/or owning it a long time, I think MLD is worth the extra money. And if you sell the shelter, MLD has better resale value.

Edit: some BearPaw shelters pitch well, just not as drum tight as MLD's seem to

I would concur with the above. In my experience, the MLD products are made better and are generally at spec in terms of weight. I have yet to see a Bear Paw product that isn't overspec by a good amount.

Thanks (I Guess!) for confirming my assumptions. Always get what you pay for, sometimes there are deals to be had so I figured I'd ask.

I had Bearpaw make me a custom inner net for my MLD duomid (I wanted a 1.5 person model…) and it was SO heavy and bulky…I'm not really sure what happened. I was terribly disappointed; it was TECHNICALLY what I wanted, but the quality just wasn't what I've come to expect from the likes of ZPacks, MLD and Enlightened Equipment.

So yeah, I guess you get what you pay for.

Besides…I'm a bit put off by BearPaw's consistent, um, copying of the designs of others. Not that there's much creativity to a pyramid, but all the other companies seem to be able to put their own spin on shelters before making money off of them. But that's just my 2 cents.

I bought a Minimalist 1 with sloped ridgeline last year and I threw it in the garbage. I couldn't in good conscience sell it on Gearswap.

For starters the thing was 3 oz over what that goofy guy at BPWD said it was going to be. And not only that, the Minimalist was ridiculously tight in the foot area. Seams weren't sewn even. What an abortion it was.

I wouldn't dare use MLD and BPWD in the same sentence. MLD and ZPacks are the gold standard!

Tell us how you really feel! Haha.

An MLD speedmid came up on gear swap that strikes the cost/quality balance I'm looking for. So pending that happening I'm happy.
