Ive posted this up before in other threads before, but i think it deserves its own thread
too many folks look solely at the weight of the headlamp, you need to look at the weight of the lamp and bats for the power it provides
a common mistake is to look at a 2000 mAh eneloop AA (1.2v) and assume it provides more "power" than a 1800 mAh Petzl AccuCore (3.7v) pack … you need to find the watt hours
in the above example the eneloop AA provides 2000 mAh x 1.2v = 2.4 Wh vs. the 1800 mAh x 3.7v = 6.6 Wh of the Accucore

the table below shows the lithium ion, NiMH and lithium (disposable) bats compared in terms of power, weight for the power and initial cost for the power
as you can see li-on and lithium bats are the most weight efficient … of course lithiums are disposable so they arent cost efficient over the long run nor loved by enviro-weenies

so how does this look one you add in the headlamp?
for demonstration purposes i added in the
Petzl Tikka RXP
– 115 g (including the 55g removable USB power pack)
– reactive lighting
– 2 cree emitters (spot and flood), red led
– reserve mode on battery for an additional 1hr+ on red light
– up to 150 lm spot (constant), 127 lm flood (constant), 215 lm combined (reactive/boost)
Petzl Tikka XP
– 89g (including 3 X AAA eneloop)
– 2 osram emitters (spot and flood), red led, SOS
– up to 120 lm spot (constant), 160 lm (boost)
Fenix HL22
– 72g (including AA eneloop)
– cree emitter, SOS
– 120 lm (constant)
Bosavi
– 62g (including non-removable power pack)
– cree emitter, red led, SOS
– 60 lm (constant), 120 lm (boost)
First lets clear up something of an off repeated myth on BPL … AA rechargeable batteries are NOT substantially lighter than AAA batteries for the same amount of power, especially not for shorter duration needs … you can see this in the table below
yes there is a bit of a small advantage but its not till you get to li-on bats (or disposable lithiums if you want to kill polar bears) that you get into REAL weight savings … picking a AA lamp over an AAA one wont make your headlamp magically float away
of course AA bats might be more useful if your other electronic devices uses em, but the a headlamp that uses a USB rechargeable pack may be even more useful

here are the weight of the headlamp and batteries needed in terms of watt hours needed
How many watt hours do you need? … well think a single AA or 3 AAAs provide ~2-3 Wh as you can see from the table above
on the Tikka XP and the Fenix HL22, this will generally last you around 5-6 hours at ~40+ lumens … enough for general camp use or easy hiking around nice trails at night
If you are doing more serious activities all night you would generally want 5+ watt hours per night depending on your usage and the efficiency of the lamp
as you can see below between 5-10 Wh, all the lamps are fairly competitive … however once you get above that point especially into the 20+ Wh range the li-on lamps really come into their own
the USB power pack assumption is a ~30+g power pack USB charger with a replaceable 18650 bat, this guarantees the quality of the power supplied as you can pick the best (panasonic) bats and change em yourself … you can pick these up for around 5-10$ and the bats for around 10-15$
A USB rechargeable lamp + pack also has several advantages
– you can always top off your headlamp so it reduce the chance youll need to change the bats in the dark
– you can use it to charge up other USB devices
– you can charge it up in town/car without having to carry any heavy AA/AAA charger, you can even use a solar charger should that be available
– many USB lamps and packs show roughly how much power you have left
the other thing that stands out is that despite being the "heavier lamp" … the Tikka RXP has a weight advantage in many cases simply because it uses a li-on battery with decent capacity (6.6 Wh) so requires less frequent changes/recharges than a AA lamp … using a 3400 mAh powerpack USB doesnt hurt either
the moral … just because a lamp is "lighter" doesnt mean it really is !!!

no doubt some folks will protest that zebralight was not included … heres a chart with higher powered headlamps

as a final note the Wh is used in a very generalized way … it all depends on the lamp, the bat and the load you are putting it under
some bats are designed for high draw applications, others to last longer under moderate loads … for example putting a 14500 bat in a zebralight vs a eneloop AA, some reviews have shown it doesnt last much longer, it simply gets brighter
