I purchased shoulder straps and a hip belt from ULA to use for my first MYOG pack. I'd like to use xpac and dyneema and some kind of stretchy lycra (back pocket) for the actual pack construction.

Since I am still in major learning mode (sewing 101), and since my first quilt attempt was a total botch job (version 2 was MUCH better!) I thought I'd try making a practice version before diving in on the more expensive xpac.

Any recommendations as to a good practice fabric to experiment with??

JoAnn sells a 1.9 oz. ripstop for $7, you can often get a coupon for 40,50, or 60% off.
Huge difference between 1.1 and under and 1.9. No shipping or wait time.

If no store close, ripstopbytheroll.com has very cheap ripstop to play with.

Only sewn the vx07 a few times now but very easy, very comparible to 1.9 IMO.

Or 200D Oxford. 4 oz/yd2. owfinc.com sells it for $4.83 / yd.

1.9 oz ripstop might be a little weak

but I used 1.1 oz ripstop with silicone coating so it's 1.5 oz/yd2. That lasted for many trips before it developed a couple rips.

Yeah – an old sheet. Lets you experiment with pack shape for ages.

Cheers

How about pack cloth. It comes in a lot of colors, easy to work with and fairly inexpensive.

Thrift store sheets or bargain bin muslin from Joannes. Nothing over a buck a yard.

A nice thing about VX fabrics is they aren't slippery. Cotton is a fine proxy.
