I'd love to take a backpacking trip with a cultural rather than wilderness focus, perhaps in Europe or Southeast Asia.

I picture a route that periodically descends into small villages with noodle stands, beer gardens, heuriger, or other local culinary delights.

Any ideas?

Edit: ideally a 1-2 week itinerary.

Okay – perhaps our upcoming trip on the Mid State Trail in November won't qualify, but I'll do my best with dinner as we "drop into the village" of Poe Valley State Park on Friday night…

No, the food on the trails themselves is not fantastic, but the food in Peru is.

You could do a nice trek in the Andes, and then eat amazing food in Peru. Influences include not only Spanish and Inca, but also strong Japanese and African elements.

You could easily drink and eat your way though something like the Annapurna Circuit.

No specifics here, but for a fact those trails exist in France, dropping into small towns frequently. Also, there are shuttle services that will make the reservations, and deliver your bags ahead each day.

We were self-supported cycling and ran into a number of folks hiking supported and self-supported.

We went with no reservations or definitive plan, just 3 weeks to go north, the east, then back, and did fine. The villages will have only one Hotel with dining room. The medium sized cities will have many restaurants, patisseries, and markets.

Hut to hut in the Dolomite Alps, Northern Italy. Once part of Austria. Great mix of Italian and German food, even in the simplest mountain huts. I did this trek in winter, on skis, but the food is likely even better in summer with fresh food available.

a couple of friends did a casual cycle tour through rural Vietnam, said it was the best culinary travel they had ever experienced. And way cheaper than Europe.

I've only been to Cambodia in SE Asia but the food was pretty good. I can only imagine how wonderful it is in Thailand or Vietnam. Unfortunately land mines are a real problem over there.

I can't speak for the trails but +1 Peru. Some of the best in the world.

I just returned from India. Probably my favorite food thus far. I have a couple more weeks to see if I picked up a stomach bug or not over there but so far so good. Again, I can't speak about the backpacking opportunities over there… yet… as I hope to do some backpacking and fishing in Kashmir in the future.

France, Italy, Europe …
Walking is a way of life over there. A lot of small hotels would get >50% of their custom from walkers.
Not only good food, but also hot showers!
GR10, GR5, TMB, … many!

Cheers
