I'm looking for some feedback from those more familiar with these two jackets. Which jacket would you choose for backpacking in temps around 30 degrees in the Mid-Atlantic? I'd probably wear just a wool base layer under either one. Is the Strata too warm? Or does the Polartec Alpha breathe so well that it compensates for the extra warmth? If I bring the Alpha will I not need to bring an extra down sweater for chillier nights? Let's say that price is not an issue in the decision. Thanks for any advice.

At 30 degrees while hiking with just a Cap 2 or Cap 4 baselayer top, the Marmot DriClime would be borderline too hot. I would probably go with an unlined windshirt/hoodie while moving, if I got chilly at 30 degrees. Think of the DriClime as windshirt/light fleece combo for warmth. It's surprisingly warm. Doesn't take a very thick lining to be warm when coupled so tightly with a wind resistant shell.

I think the PolarTec Alpha would be a furnace at 30 degrees while moving. 30 is just not that cold. I really don't go for insulated layers until I stop. It doesn't matter how well something breaths if you are completely overheated and sweating like crazy. At 30 degrees, just a Cap 4 baselayer top is plenty warm enough for me — unless there's wind.

I did pick up a cheapo summer sale deal on a Marmot PolarTec Alpha jacket. Looking forward to trying it out this winter, but I doubt I'll be wearing it while on the move. I see it more as a water/wind resistant alternative to fleece.

I think I driclime fits your criteria well. If you're marching (or skiinning) up hill for a while, it might get too hot, but for intermittent windy (alpine) conditions at 30, the driclime with a thin base is great. Just unzip it and vent if you're getting hot.

Great. Thanks for the advice. I might actually pick up the Ether or Stride because I'd really appreciate the pockets.
