Lots of these sorts of things on ebay for $4-$5:
My iPhone 4 attaches reasonably well to its charging/data adaptor. If I was trying to be UL while using a mini tripod, I'd epoxy a 1/4-20 nut onto a cut-off charging adaptor. Or put excess epoxy (containing steel filings) on the adaptor and then drill and tap it in 1/4-20 thread.
To be SUL, just bring a rubber band or binder clip and affix the camera to a tree, or a multi-legged branch found along the trail.

It's fantastic! I used it for photos/videos of me and my 4-year old when we went camping last week.
