For anyone with a smartphone that's interested in learning how to tie knots I think this free app is perfect. I am in no way affiliated with them, it's just a free app I have used and figured I would share with you. It shows how to tie most knots in 3d, you can reverse the angles and flip it around to see how it's tied, you can even show it in slow motion. When tieing a knot with 2 different ropes, it presents them in red and blue. Everyone should know how to tie a few basic knots while in the wilderness and I believe this app can help you learn easily.

$0.99. nope, sorry, lost my business if you don't include a free trial.
I value my morning $1 black coffee too much to risk it on an app ;)

Columbia's free "What Knot to do in the Greater Outdoors" app is also another great one.

"It is a free app"

Not according to iTunes. I just went in and searched for the app. It's 99 cents.

Looks interesting though, and is highly regarded by a number of people, so I went ahead and bought it.

Sorry bpl. Looking at the app..it is 99 cents. I got it a year or 2 ago and it was free. Sorry for false advertising. It is well worth the dollar though.

Will it work without a network (i.e. cellphone) connection?

It may seem obvious; but I've downloaded some knot apps in the past that simply would not work in the wilderness without a cellphone connection. Makes them kinda pointless to me.

Perhaps the best time to finally learn how to tie that bowline knot isn't when out in the backcountry without cell service?

I have to agree. You should learn these knots before you actually need them out in wilderness with no cell phone coverage. On that note, I get it that it is nice to have a pocket reference in case you come upon a situation where a knot is needed that you may not be sure how to properly tie it. Honestly, I'm not sure if the app needs service. I am going on a trip tomorrow thru Saturday and where I am heading there is no cell coverage, so I will try the app and see if it works and I will let you know.

I like that one, too! I don't use it in the woods, but I'll use it at home to brush up when I'm bored or just before a trip.

I was looking for a knot tying app but decided that I prefer to go to YouTube on my smartphone and then search for a video(s) which explains and demonstrates the specific knot.

It's easier for me to understand watching someone doing it.

Doug: Thanks for the info about the cell connection.

And to the haters; yes I do already know the bowline and other frequently used knots. But more obscure knots are sometimes also useful. HYOH.
