yeah – cut off water bottle – maybe a 1 liter bottle and put some marks at the 1 cup and 1 pint level so I can use as measurer – maybe 1/2 ounce

it's stiff and the opening is right at the edge so you can get water out of a shallow pool or stream. You can fill a collapsable bag all the way to the top.

i use those small squeeze pouches with the top cut off, works really well and doesn't take as long as you would think. been using this for a while packs small very easy to get water out of very shallow water source. i like this so much that i got to thinking and now carry a second one with the bottom cut off, o yea a pre filter funnel for my dirty bag, that i can shove my bandana in if i get that desperate for mucky water. i haven't had to used the pre filter funnel yet but at little weight i know it's there. here is a link to gerber if you don't know what pouches i'm talking about

John,

I like the hanky in the bottle trick and will check out the Gerber squeeze pouches.

Could not the a single Gerber bottle (with bottom cut off) serve as both the scooper and the filter bottle?

On my last trip I used two smart water bottles instead of the swayer squeeze bags because I found them easier to fill. One was a "dirty" bottle and one was "clean". They interface with the swayer filter just fine, and they are easy to fill.

thanks daryl i didn't think of that, i could if i saved the cap, i think there's little confusion these pouches are about the size of the palm of your hand carried in addition to your squeeze filter set up. the pouches are recycled from baby-child food products such as Gerber baby food products. i don't think the link worked. (fyi some baby food products make for good backpacking snacks). when looking at the two pouches i have the one with the bottom cut out has less volume (funnel) weight 2 grams, the scoop has the top cut off a has more volume for scooping weight 1 gram. some people have cleaned these pouches out and used to carry fuel for there stoves to save weight. i personally wouldn't go to the trouble and risk of having one brake, but it's been done before successfully.i'll try another link as i can't upload pictures at this time

It isn't the absolute lightest, nor does it pack flat, but I have been very happy with a 2 or 3-L soda bottle, cut down to the wide part. It flexes to scoop water and flexes more to form more or less a spout. The bottom is flat enough to set on fairly level ground and not have it tip over. This same dipper/scoop becomes an extra water reservoir in camp, wash bucket, etc. While I'm hiking, the cut-down bottle carries and protects my cooking and fist aid items. Obviously, the 3-L bottle holds more, but the 2-L is quite satisfactory.
