Swedish friends will be visiting late October with their 8 year old girls, who are really into climbing and bouldering. They're wondering about good stores for picking up gear for the girls and possibly some for themselves, including local stores in the SF Bay Area and online. Other than REI, which local stores and online stores would you recommend? Really appreciate any suggestions.

Other than the occasional climbing wall once in a blue moon and scrambling on trail, I haven't climbed for quite some time.

Wasn't sure where to post this question, so please don't get bent out of shape if you can think of a better place for it…

locally you might try
sports basement http://www.sportsbasement.com/
or lombardi sports (just learned it will be closing by the end of the year, though)

some climbing gyms have a small shop attached,

http://www.planetgranite.com/

online
campsaver often has good deals, and fast shipping to CA http://www.campsaver.com/climbing

if you haven't already, you might post your request on http://www.mountainproject.com/forums/

Thank you very much Sharon, David, Kevin and Jeremy – these are fantastic suggestions and easy for them to follow up on. The brand explanation should be particularly helpful as they are just getting started out.

Has anyone ever dealt with Climb High in VT?
http://climbhigh.com/ I bought something from them over a decade ago but no recent experience.

when i order from the states i usually order from backcountry, campsaver, and all those other major sites … you can often find sales and coupons

if you use activejunky you get up to 10% off back to your paypal

http://www.activejunky.com/invite/53976/eric-chan (note this link gives me 5 dollahs if you buy something)

it all depends what you want to buy … my eurobum friends tell me that things such as cams, biners, draws are all cheaper here …. but shoes and ropes arent as many of those are made by european brands

;)
