So I found a fair deal on a new pair of black diamond alpine carbon cork poles and I bought them. Received them today. My first impression is a positive one. I really like the flick lock system on my older Black diamond poles, the newer flick lock system on these poles seems to work just as well, if not better. Time and trail miles will tell. The cork handles fit my hand well and like how they have the grips a little below the handle so if needed you can move your hand down and hold the poles from there instead of having to readjust the lengths. The straps are big (thick), but I think they are ok. I wish instead of big straps they would just use something like a paracord..it would save some weight and I think it would work just fine. Speaking of weight..I don't think they are heavy. Some reviews I read people say they are a bit heavy. Well they are lighter then my other poles, so I will not complain about them feeling heavy. I didn't weigh them yet so I can't give any numbers but I will say that they hold well in my hands and I believe I am gonna love these poles. I will use them with my bivy and also to pitch my patrol shelter. They will see their first trail miles next week when I hit up the West Rim trail in PA.

Nice poles.

Lighter than my trusty old Komperdell's.

I've purchased three pair although I donated my first pair to some lucky hiker at N. Cascades NP after leaving them there. I've found both the new and old version of the flick locks to be equally wonderful. I'm not easy on mine but they are holding up well.

I intend to follow Chad's lead and add Gossamer Gear grips to mine later this winter. I left the straps on one pair for snowshoeing and took them off of the pair I take hiking. At first I used them religiously but in time they became a hassle and I really don't miss them. Certainly a YMMV kind of thing.

I have been using mine for a while now, and am happy enough with them. I picked mine up off of S&C for $60 or so… they were the previous years model with a flick lock, but it was plastic instead of metal… or something… same locks though. As Ian mentioned, I replaced the grips on them with the Gossamer Gear grips, and of course removed the straps. Each pole now weighs in somewhere around 6.5 oz. I have got to admit, I am much happier with them with the GG grips… much more comfy to me, and it feels like a more balanced weight to me.

Anyway, on my recent hike, I had to tighten the screw on the lower section of one pole 3 different times… I am not sure why it kept getting loose… Other than this though, they are holding up well and I will continue to use them.

Chad, not sure what the issue was but maybe some blue locktite would do the trick? If the part's failing, you can buy a replacement lock from BD. So far no issues with mine (knock on wood).

I still use mine for snowshoeing (w/ snow baskets), but went to UD Z-poles a couple of years ago-10 oz vs 18 oz and the ability to fold them up (especially running) is what prompted the switch
