Hello,

I am looking for some good suggestions on hikes in the Santa Fe National Forest. We would probably have 2-3 nights to spend and we have equipment for cool or cold weather.

Preferably, I would like a loop as we would fly to ABQ and rent a car to the forest.

Any insight would be very much appreciated!

TIA

Go to Pecos. Then north on iron gate.

take the trail at the iron gate trail head to pecos river (beatty's flats). back track some, then take trail 270 to 249, then make way over to mora river and mora flats, then back to trail head. plenty of water. some trout fishing. few peoples…

by now (nov 1) aspens have lost leaves…

I was there 4 weeks ago for a 2 night trip. I did the following loop:

Day 1: hiked to Pecos Baldy Lake from Jack's Creek trailhead, camped near Pecos Baldy Lake
Day 2: hiked to Truchas Lakes along the Trailrider's Wall (Awesome day of hiking! I saw more bighorn sheep than people. Hike 1/4 mile or so North of the lakes on the Skyline Trail for the least windy camping)
Day 3: took the Skyline trail North to the Beatty's Flats trail, then took Beatty's Flats trail back to Jack's Creek trailhead

Day 3 was kind of long, but very pretty. You could camp somewhere along the Beatty's Flats trail (but camping is prohibited at Beatt's Flats itself).

I had pretty mild weather. Nights in the mid-30s. I don't know how much (if any) snow is up there now.
