After reading this I was poking around online and came up with the following on Gutermann and Mettler options which seem readily available in my area and online (PNW). Just figured I'd post in case anyone else is wondering.
1) Light duty thread for stuff sacks, quilts, clothing. Most recommendations are to use a polyester thread, tex 30.
- Gutermann Sew-All (aka Mara 100) (tex 30). Manufacturer recommended needle size of 70/10 to 80/12.
- Mettler Metrosene Plus (aka Seralon) (tex 30).
2) Medium duty thread for tarps, hammocks, shelters, and the like: Most recommendations are for polyester, tex 40.
- Gutermann Mara 70 (tex 40).
- Guterman Tera 40 (tex 35).
- Mettler Extra Strong (tex 40).
3) Heavy duty thread, not likely to be used in my UL gear.
- Gutermann Extra Strong (tex 75 — per email correspondence with Gutermann).
