This was well worth the wait…

This last weekend was an important one for us, because when we entered the park through the Big Oak Flat entrance station, I was able to show his ID and purchase a Senior Pass for $10.

According to the USGS store that sells them:

A Senior Pass is a $10.00 lifetime pass that provides access to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by five Federal agencies, with up to 100% of the proceeds being used to improve and enhance visitor recreation services.

It allows me (and anyone with me) to enter any National Park in the USA for free. Plus it qualifies me for discounts on other costs like campground fees. Very cool.

Here’s a link to the FAQs about the Senior Pass. Spread the word.

you have to be 62. I got a couple years to go. Can't wait…

the only thing is, I can easily afford the fees. My niece with several kids, for example, has a much more difficult time. She's the one that should be getting the discount. Or everyone should have to pay their fair share. When you have loopholes for some, either there won't be enough funds, or those that don't get the loopholes will have to pay more.

Perhaps another point of view is that it encourages more people to use the system as was mentioned in another thread about the death of backpacking stating that visitor use is down. I agree we should pay for all services we receive.

I have a pass. Where I used to boondock in remote locations with our camper for free, I am more inclined to stay in established campgrounds in the off season when there are no people. Since we are self-contained and don’t use any amenities the government is generating income from me they would never have gotten in the past. As much as we have camped since getting our pass, it is several hundred dollars in new income. So they are smart (for once). Also it encourages retired people on limited income to camp more often generating income they wouldn’t have gotten.

When I got my pass I figured it was a Good Day Be Old

I think I would feel guilty not paying.

I like supporting the parks.

Sometimes I even pay extra…

crazy me, eh?

"I think I would feel guilty not paying."

Given that I have paid a lot taxes for almost 50 years, many years at an excessively high tax rate for things I don't use and things I consider immoral, I would like all that money given back to me. That isn't going to happen. So I don't feel guilty about the pass at all.

Too bad you're not GE or Chevron – then you would pay no federal income tax

Too bad you work for your income. If it was all from inherited wealth, then all your income would be long term capital gains that's only taxed at 15% if that.

I don't feel guilty about the pass. My wife has one. I'm a cheapskate so I enjoy using it.

"Given that I have paid a lot taxes for almost 50 years…"

The evil geniusness of this is that if they have high taxes on us average people, we'll get all pissed and vote for people that say they're going to reduce taxes, who then keep the loopholes in place and pass new loopholes but do only token reductions for us average people…
