Doe anyone know if they got snow int he southern Sierra in that last storm that went through late September? I know we got some in northern Sierra up high, but would like to know if there is snow on the ground up high in the Southern Sierra…

Bishop Pass?
Paiute Pass?
Lamark Pass?
Darwin Canyon?
Kearsarge Pass/Lakes?
Glen Pass?
Rae Lakes?

thanks,

Billy

They got snow down that way. There were some missing hikers doing the Rae Lakes loop that lost the trail.

But since it's been 100 degrees near every day since then (in the valley and coast side), I wouldn't plan on doing any skiing or anything.

I'm heading to Yosemite Friday and I'll be shocked if I see any snow.

"I'm heading to Yosemite Friday and I'll be shocked if I see any snow."

On this past weekend, I found lots of little patches of snow around 10,000 feet. Nothing that made an obstacle.

I know it's not the Sierras, but just as a data point: this weekend we tried to hike up White Mountain Peak and were slowed down by the amount of snow above 12,000' to the point we headed back without finishing. Oddly enough, the "trail" (really a dirt road) was the worst — we were post-holing at least 14" deep in some places. Off to either side the snow wasn't as bad, but it was still slow-going over the loose rocks and we worried about finishing before dark.

The weather was beautiful, though. And I had never been in the Whites before — spectacular views of the Sierras, especially with the clear skies.

sa

The only snow left in the southern portion is a dusting in the northern shadows above 12,000'

This is from Leor over the weekend.

as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, eh?

Aaron, despite the subject line on your posting, you want to point out that this is in the Southern Sierra Nevada, not the White Mountains.

Here was Owens Valley on Oct 5th, before it got hot again.

Yes I know this is the Sierra's.
It's the original topic. I just hit reply on the subject.

No personal experience of your spots, but in case it's of any help, I was up at Minaret Lake 9,800, Lake Cecile 10,239, Iceberg 9,774 on 10/06. I went over Nancy pass at 10,169 feet – no snow on the ground. Very minimal in some shadow at Minarets. Didn't see much snow on Ritter or Banner Peak from Iceberg Lake. Here are some photos of the surroundings.Iceberg Ritter Banner

Here's Cecile Lake with the base of Clyde Minaret (top 12,264) just off to the right.

Here are the minarets and surrounding country side from just under minaret vista on minaret road.Minaret view
