So, I ordered a pound of down from Down Linens. I went for grey (cheaper than white and probably just aesthetics which I don't care about), 950 loft, with WR treatment. This was the highest spec they have. I did send them an email, asking what the WR treatment was…I figured it was probably just putting something like nikwax down treatment (etc) through it after doing their careful washing process.

However, the down has now arrived. Its in a big Orange woven bag (like what feed comes in here in Aus). Stamped hugely and clearly on the outside is

ALLIED FEATHER.

Now, I'm guessing that they didn't just put my random pound of down in a random Allied Feather bag that they had lying around after buying some down from the "competition" in order to do some comparisons etc. Down Linens sells too much down for them to be that random in their packaging processes, they have to be organised. SO I'm guessing that their WR down, at least at this high spec, is actually straight from Allied Feather, and is Hyperdry; Down Linens is just a retailer. For this particular product at least.

This is interesting as Allied Feather makes no mention of a 950 loft down on their website, 900 is their highest listing, and they mention that 900 is available in limited quantities due to its rarity. 950 and 1000 is of course even rarer.

So, I'm wondering, is this "950" just upmarketed 900 hyperdry? Is it genuinely 950? Did it start out as 900 and then get hyperdry treatment, which marketing hype says can increase the loft, thus Down Linens are remeasuring it when they recieve it and thus confirming its definitely 950? Are down linens going through and sorting high loft hyperdry down they buy (eg 850 and 900) to create 950 as well as lower grade WR downs? I'm guessing its possible they have grading machines to do so. Is Allied Feather overly conservative with their loft ratings?

When I get the chance I'll carefully decant some down (this packaging isn't going to make it easy…) and take it to uni to measure weight and volume in a lab to high significant figures. Then I can figure out the exact loft ratio of this down. I want to know, as it will affect my stuffing calcs; I'm only aiming for a few percent of overstuff max…I don't want it to come under.

I, for one, am very interested to hear about your results. I've been very interested in their down because you can really customize exactly what you want.

One thing I was wondering was if there would be much natural smell with the grey down, but there is none. Most likely just aesthetic. I'll probably be able to tell the difference through the .33 cuben I have but I think I'll prefer the darker look than if it was bright white.

I just realised the label that is sewn into the bottom edge of this bag of down, states that it is 950 loft WR (its a hand written label with permanent texta). No doubt Allied Feather sewed that label into their bag, and hand wrote it when packaging the down before shipping to Down Linens.

So they must reserve 950 for special customers. I wonder if they secretly supply 1000 down to manufacturers. I wonder if they have a secret special stash of 1050…

Adam, allied owns down linens. I talked to one of the guys over at down linens and he was involved in pushing the sale of small down quantities to the diy'ers. He had a hard time convincing the powers to be to retail small amounts. He would like to see even smaller packages but that was a no go for now. Quality should be excellent as they are the supplier to WM,FF and others. I believe the advertise that on one of there sights.

Well that changes a lot of things!

Folks, get over to downlinens and get your 950 hyperdry!

The price for a pound is pretty reasonable IMHO. If you really don't need a full pound, then not too hard to gearswap the rest on.

Allied does have small amounts of 950 available from time to time. Down linens is the retail front end for Allied bulk down. After getting a 5# sample of 950 from DL i tried to order one full bag from Allied to have for special custom requests and maybe a run for BPL customers. A full bag is 15#, they didn't even have enough on hand to fill a bag so i was only able to get 11#. Obviously this is a very high cost low availability item to not even be able to get one bag. I wonder if as part of their sorting processes occasionally they have small batches that rate higher than 900 that they can sell at a premium but since it happens so rarely don't bother listing it as a standard offering. My speculation only. I know their fill power ratings are before treatment, so DL is not treating 900 then listing it as 950.

Great Info Tim.

I feel very privileged to have 1# of it then, I'm going to have to be very careful not to lose any bits in the process…each one will be like a tear shedded by a BPLer!

Power ratings before treatment…that does make me more confident that I'm not going to understuff it accidentally.

Cheers!

I have two WM Ultralight bags that both have grey down. I can't imagine them using lesser quality.
What are you planning on making???

There is a price premium on the white. I figure they just put it on for aesthetic reasons.

Quilt, and also a baby quilt/carrier cover for a mate who's about to take a newborn OS into a northern winter :-)

With a whole pound I'll have a reasonable amount left over for something else down the track. Barring any filling "incidents".

As far as I was told the white is used in lighter color fabrics if you object to seeing the darker down through the lighter fabrics. No difference in quality or insulating factor. Have fun with your projects.
