I am in the market for a new tent/shelter for two adults, looking to keep my weight down to around 3lbs or less. In the past I mostly hiked with a buddy and we each carried soloist equipment: hammocks and tarps, each with our own food supply and cooking se, each self sufficient with our own likes and needs.

Now, I finally got my lady out into the back country and she loved it. This summer we used a warbonnet blackbird double 1.7oz, turns out it's pretty comfy for two sleepers to share as long as they are into cuddling! On that trip we each brought a hammock and tarp, but now that I am confident that we can share, one hammock and one sleeping bag for two hikers is a pretty good situation weight-wise and for summer trips that is how we are going to roll from now on.. Anyway…

We are going to do a few shoulder season trips this fall and I think we are going to want some sort of ground shelter system. For now I have a golite SL3 tarp with a bearpaw half-insert, (cuben tub floor). My current system is right around 3lbs as it sits, she and I have done a few nights of yard camping and have found some preferences:

-hate the center pole
-two doors would be better so we can pee without waking eachother up
-more peak space is more better
-seperate vestibules would be nice too for keeping our gear sorted.

Right now the Stratospire-II is at the front of the pack, plus nemo has a similar offering but it requires four trekking poles for setup instead of two. I like the double-rainbow but prefer to avoid tent poles where I can. REI also has a decent offering in the quarter dome II.

Open to suggestion!

candidates to compare:

SMD Haven + net tent (cuben or sil nylon)
Zpacks Hexamid Duplex (cuben)

The Haven looks great too! Definitely a contender now.

I am interested in the Zpacks duplex, but would sort of prefer a two part approach, I would like to setup the net tent seperately for stargazing or during the day when bugs are fierce. Also sometimes I like to bring a tarp with no netting as a secondary camping space.

Jeff,

the comparison between Haven and Duplex that Katherine recommended is right now being discussed in this post

Unless you are smitten with cuben fiber, I'd go with the StratoSpire 2 and call it done. It's a terrific 2P shelter that will on occasion stretch to 3P. It checks all your boxes. Wind resistance is great. However be aware you're getting a footprint that rivals 9'x9' pyramid shelters. Dig deep on Henry's website and you will find an option for him to seam seal it for you. It's $25 or $30 well spent, as he does a great job.

In camping with the Ms., or with most people, two doors makes all the difference. Better sleep and everyone has a place for their stuff.

New redesigned Lightheart Gear Duo:

Perhaps you could pitch the Seek Outside Lil' Bug Out Shelter with 2 trekking poles with extenders, one on each side by the doors meeting at the apex like some do with the MLD Duomid (I'd check with the company or with Dave C who reviewed it):

I think of the Tarptent Stratospire 2 as a modified 2P Notch to make best use of space and improve wind shedding.

You'd have to wait for them to come out, but there are also some new lightweight 2P shelters to be released in 2015 which were featured in the latest Outdoor Retailer show. See Will Reitveld's excellent report on the show.

I posted this photo before to give a somewhat better idea of the SS2 shape .
It is in fact an hexagonal footprint, not all that obvious from the std ground level photos.
Ok, I had the time …

Franco thanks for that photo – gives a much better sense of the shelter shape. What's the weight of the SS2 with a ripstop inner?

With the fabric inner about 49oz, inc stakes (6) and guylines.
You need to add 2 stakes for the apex guylines.

+1 on the Haven tarp. I have one and it's great for 2 people. Total weight with stakes is around 34oz.
