According to the below article dated Sept 26, a Washington Congressman (Hastings R-Washington) is attempting to attach a budget rider to increase fees that could include remote, undeveloped US wilderness areas. Apparently this would not allow for any public input and there's a lot of "gray area" for future increases.

I can see raising fees for new facilities, formalize secure parking, or during peak season to control crowds to minimize impact, though the fees to hike shouldn't be exclusionary .. but pretty much against entrance fees to plain old walk on public lands myself.
