ETA Express: close to the perfect cold-weather cook system?

The Eta stove got a workout in the CO series, yes, it's good at both heating and at delivering low CO. I haven't had the time yet to test the pots independently – we went walking in France for 3 months instead!

Now, this new version won't be available for a while (2008), but rest assured we will do our best!

It is strange that this method is so little known. Granted, if you have no water at all and it is 10 F outside things can be a bit tricky at the start.
But water just slightly above freezing will pump enough heat into the butane in a canister to keep it running adequately, until you can add a little warm water to the cold water. Don't go immersing the canister in hot water: that can be a bit hazardous!

From what i can tell, the bottom of the windscreen is open, so maybe enough air gets to the flame to keep the CO down. But that is guessing – I don't know yet.

A great stove/pot setup.

here is a picture of the next phase of my stove work using a lightened JetBoil pot, I am thinking of cutting the top off to make it into a 550 pot.

Yeah, I've seen a few posts about the Eta Express (though hadn't noticed the manufacturers comment at BGT). I'm very much looking forward to seeing it and seeing it tested.

Wow Tony, that's a great setup! Any guess at what kind of BTUs the burner throws off?

Dr. Caffin: Sorry I hadn't read the CO series. I let my subscription lapse when BPL shifted its' focus towards gear reviews. (I found that much of the useful information was in the forums anyway — excluding, that is, your very excellent articles.)

Re: immersing the canister in water, if I have no water left and I have let my canister get to -10F, I supposed I'd grit my teeth and put it against my base layer for the last 10 minutes before I got to camp. If I didn't have enough body heat left I'd probably pee on it — and if I didn't have any pee left either I guess I'd consider myself to be out of luck!

I emailed Primus about the ETA Express: they suggest it should ship to the US by January and thus will be in stores by early February. No word on Aus or Canada, unfortunately…
