After using tincture of iodine once, it was enough for me to look for different treatment alternatives. Still makes a good disinfectant though, so it stays in my medkit.

I remember my father using tincture of iodine on small cuts – stung like a you know what. No thanks across the board I'm fine with a sawyer mini and neosporin.!

Since I made my first post, I have looked at several references for using Tincture of Iodine for emergency water purification. The USP Tincture of iodine commonly available at most drug stores is supposed to contain approximately 1 mg of Iodine per drop and the recommendations are to use 5 drops per quart for clean water and 10 drops per quart for cloudy water. Iodine is not particularly effective against cysts, but filtration is, so filtration followed by iodine should be effective against most everything. That said, do you really want to carry drug store Tincture of Iodine for water disinfection rather than Aquamira or some other disinfectant that is made specifically for the purpose of water disinfection. My original concern, and I still have it, is that some alcohol other than Ethanol might be used to manufacture the Tincture of Iodine. Isopropyl or denatured alcohol could be used, since the original purpose was would disinfection, not ingestion. I think that tincture of iodine could be used for emergency water disinfection, but so could boiling.
