Not sure how Primaloft (or any syn for that matter) works, I was thinking about getting a DAS Parka, but then thought it would be much more useful to have a Nano Puff (60-g) and a Micro Puff (100-g) and then combine them when it's really cold, just like I do w/ down jackets (I don't own a "big" down puffy- but rather a light one and a medium one). The DAS uses 120-g Primaloft w/ additional 60-g in the torso. Can you simply add the amount of Primaloft used to make a comparison?

There is a 6-ish oz weight penalty for two garments, but the versatility of two garments would trump the weight (not to mention cost as I already own one, the other is much cheaper! :) )

Soooo… will a Nano Puff used in conjunction w/ a Micro Puff approximates the clo/warmth of the DAS parka?

If you have two articles of clothing, X and Y, their combined Clo can equal a larger article of clothing, Z. Clo stacks, in fact you may gain a minor amount by having a slight air barrier between X and Y, of course at a weight penalty for the extra fabric. Sometimes it's better to have one large garment to quickly bleed hot air to avoid sweating. Often it's better to have multiple layers to adjust per the varying conditions. High-activity generally favors the single big jacket which is only needed at rest. More casual or sustained backpacking finds multiple layers beneficial.

Mike,

It sure does stack.

I do the same with an Arxteryx Atom SV and Nuclei, giving me 160g in the Arms and Hood and 180g in the body.

Why not try your Ghost Whisperer under a synth piece, that's the best of both worlds.

OK- good-thanks :)

Stephen- I considered that, but this setup I intend to use big game hunting- typically I'm covering a lot of country and working up a pretty good sweat, but then often stopping for sometimes extended periods- glassing (or if I'm lucky processing meat :)). I was little nervous about the thin down layer against soaked clothing?????

Mike,

2 synethtic pieces woukd be perfect for that.

You coukd always wear the nano puff if you are moving slowly.

In the past I have packed 3 synethtic items adding a 100gm2 Rab Generator vest, giving 280gm2 in the body and 160gm2 in the sleeves and hood. I really like synthetic for day trips when weight is not as big an issue.

Another combo Mike would be a
Polartec Alpha piece instead of the Nano Puff, a bit heavier and not as warm but has very high CFM.

I use synethtic a lot when back in Ireland and they always worked out well.

Layering works fine

Size the larger poofay to fit over the lighter one

As youll be wearing the lighter one when active/semiactive … The larger one goes right on top for belays

As to the micropoofay, patagucci cheaped out and used primaloft sport … It used to have PL1 till the latest gen

Find a poofay that uses PL1 or some other top insulatio

Dont buy $$$$ gear that uses "lesser" insulation and tries to make up for it in marketing … Especially since they used to use PL1 in it and still do in their nanopoofay

Its like buying a "top of the line" sleeping bag that uses 600 fill down

Unless its on an extreme (>50%) sale that is

;)
