Recently I saw a post here where John Abela was selling a Montbell lantern shade, but only with a bunch of other stuff I didn't need. After communicating with him, he pointed me at the manufacturer's description when I expressed the idea of using up some small samples of cuben I'd gotten from Cubic Tech years ago to make my own. It's basically a cylinder that fits over your headlamp, with a drawstring to hang it from if you like, and a reflective cone at the far end. It worked so well that I made a couple of smaller ones to use with a photon light (the headlamp one was quite bright in the tent, even on low, which is nice but sometimes you only want a little bit of light). A very easy project.LightsLanternHanging light

Great use of those samples. And worthy too. Fabric headlamp shades work surprisingly well as illuminating the inside of a tent or vehicle.

I just use my cuben stuff sacks that I already have packed with me, that way I don't have to bring a dedicated shade.

That's a great multi-use idea (cuben stuff sack as lantern)! – but the only cuben I own right now is the lantern shade and the other samples that size, so for now I'll hang on to my shade. Having the reflective cuben at the end seems to increase the light slightly, for what that's worth.

You can get a stuff sack kit from Yama Mountain Gear for only $30. I made 4 identical stuff sacks with it, but there are lots of different ways to make different sizes.
