All, I have a Shangri La 3 at the moment and its a great tent but a PITA to set up in certain conditions so I am looking for a light 2 person 3 season freestanding double wall tent that has around 58 sq ft of floor space(the Shangri La claims this amount of floor space but who knows with Golite) and decent headroom weighing in around 3lbs or less if possible. Can you give me some suggestions as to what tents to look at. This is a tent for my wife and I and she won't do just a tarp she wants to have a tent with an inner net. Thanks!

I don't have the resources to buy a bunch of tents and return or resell them. If people could give me an idea of what manufacturers to look at it would be much appreciated.

I believe the Copper Spur Big Agnes 2 person comes in less than three pounds and the Fly Creek even less. I don't know that there is a 2 person tent traditional double walled tent much lighter than the Fly Creek.

They are pricey however.

You could look at a tarptent double rainbow as well although not a traditional double wall tent.

I have an LL Bean Microlight FS2 tent that I think is terrific – it is just under 4 pounds but is well made – well designed – subject to Beans outstanding customer service and about half the price of the BA tents.

In my experience, you are going to have a hard time finding a free-standing, fully double-wall tent that will comfortably fit two people for under 3 pounds. Especially at 58 sq feet, which is much larger than any tent I've ever seen advertised as 2p.

The Big Sky Evolution is about the only option that fits the majority of your criteria. Just a couple ounces under 3lbs but quite a bit smaller than you wanted.

If you're willing to forgo a full double wall for a hybrid of sorts, Sierra Designs has a few options, also Lightheart Gear, Tarptent, and Six Moons Designs all have models that might work for you.

You need to keep in mind that there is a lot of unusable space inside a pyramid tent because the walls slope inwards all around.
So when comparing size, focus more on the usable space rather than the footprint size.
As mentioned at around 3 lbs a double wall tent is going to be pretty small .
If you compromise a bit , you could take a look at the Tarptent Double Moment , about 53 oz.
It has a lot more usable space than many doubles, stands up with 2 stakes only .
With some care you could use rocks or sand bags over the ends avoiding using stakes at all.

The Golite Imogene Ultralight 3:
Weighs 3 lbs. 1 oz.;
freestanding;
double-walled (inner net & outer fly); and
comfortably fits 2.

Ironically, I sold mine to purchase a GoLite SL3.

The field of 2 person freestanding tents is not small but when you add LIGHT into the requirement then it is small.

My own take is on this is a Tarptent Scarp 2 because I feel the fly and pole can be carried by one person while the inner tent and stakes is carried by another – and may they never lose one another along the trail!
Yeah, not freestanding unless you get the two optional crossing poles, but quite fast to set up. The two X-ing poles required for a freestanding tent make it "not light".

My girlfriend and I have been using the FlyCreek UL2 when she goes with me. For a while now, I've been trying to convince her that we should invest in something with a vestibule that could hold our packs, and allow us to get in and out of the tent without rain falling inside it. In the past she always replied, "I like our tent", the translation being, "don't spend more money on backpacking gear". This however was coming from somebody that hadn't been backpacking with even the hint of rain.

Fortunately for my gear buying addiction, we saw a somewhat unexpected thunderstorm last weekend. After some rain fell directly on her sleeping bag and she started imagining how miserable she'd be trying to cook food from inside the cramped little tent… she has agreed we should get a tent that is more tolerable in the rain.

I've so far looked at The Dash by REI, but the skirt of the vestibule looks like it sits too high to protect gear. The Copper Spur UL2 would be good, the price tag is just creeping out of my price range for a tent I'll only use a few times a year with the girlfriend.

I think I'm going with the Double Rainbow.

All, I am sorry for not responding sooner for some reason I do not get notifications for new comments in the threads I post in even though I have "watch this thread" selected. I appreciate the input and I have been eyeing tarp tents for awhile as they look amazing. That double moment looks fantastic. The SL3 is good because we can keep all our gear in the tent and it has enough headroom that we can change in it or hang out at night. My wife feels very claustrophobic in a smaller tent. I had the chance to buy a Imogene UL3 but bought the SL3 instead. I wish I had gone with the imogene.
