In two weeks, I hope to be taking my family on a 3day hike. Forks of the Kern is recommended to me in case the high sierra is too cold. I have never hiked in this area before and I'm trying to quickly piece together some info so I have a reasonbly good chance of a) finding the place and b) not dragging my family on some dry dusty death march.

From the looks of things, there are alot of dirt roads intersecting the area and alot of hunting/equestrian activity. I'm thinking about starting from Lewis camp trailhead and heading toward Jerkey Meadows and eventually maybe Kern Flat or just following the river and camping down there. Will I be encountering any confusing road junctions or trail interruptions? I usually dont fret over these details much, but with the gang in tow, I want to avoid any frustrating navigation issues. Is the trail decent single track or is it dusty sandy horse/motorbike type stuff?

Has anyone been down to this area recently? Any tips as far as finding the trailhead, areas to avoid because their hot/dry and not as pleasant, etc? Can one find decent big camping sites down along the river canyon or should I plan on sticking to designated campgrounds? Are certain campgrounds real busy with rafting/horseback folks?

Thanks for any info you guys can help out with, my family will very much appreciate it. :)

Take the Forest Service road a couple miles east of Johnsondale and turn right.

Drive about 20+ miles to Lloyd Meadows. There is a trail to the Forks of the Kern. You are entering the Golden Trout Wilderness so check permit rules.

Lots of places to camp.

Been about 5 years since I was down there.

My one & only time down to the Forks was in 1997. Just to add a couple of points:

– I believe it's deer season, so you'll likely see hunters down there. We did, and they had established a sizable camp near the fork, with canvas cabin tents, wood-burning stoves and a gutted deer hanging from a tree. The guys in the camp were pleasant enough and we heard no banjos.

– Once we passed the hunters' camp and hiked upstream on the main Kern, we didn't see anyone else. There were several nice campgrounds along the river.

– Our trip was probably a week later into Oct. than yours will be, and it was damned cold at night.

– The fly fishing was great, but wading in the cold river was downright painful.

Hey Adan, I sent you a PM. I'm pretty familiar with this area but don't like to publicly share too many details.

The western Golden Trout is a neat area. As long as you don't mind sharing the area with horse packers, it's a nice option. Kinda' has an "wild west" feel to it with all the packers, high country grazing, old cabins, etc.
