I'm looking for suggestions and ideas for beginner-level, pet-friendly, overnight backpacking trips. Maybe nearish Jennie Lakes Wilderness, Dinkey Lakes, John Muir Wilderness areas for now? Less traveled, sparsely populated would be fantastic.

The ability to have a campfire would be nice, but everywhere I know of at the moment is still on restriction. We had been wanting to make a trip in a couple weeks, before it starts to get really cold. Any thoughts, ideas, advice is welcome. Thanks!

Taya,

Check out the Kern River area, there are some short trips out there along the Forks that are short and close to you. Unsure if it is pet friendly or not.

Los Padres National Forest should be fairly close to you as well. My favorite pet friendly trails in the area are the Santa Cruz Trail, Manzana Creek area, and Gene-Marshall Piedra-Blanca Trail. All three are beginner friendly. Santa Cruz and GMPB having more elevation climbs and Manzana Creek being very flat.

San Gorgonio is my home stomping grounds and I spend a lot of time out there. Quite a few beginner friendly trails if you are willing to drive this far out, but given you are in Kern County, I would rather drive north towards the Sierras in the Inyo NF area.

PM me and I can throw out some camp sites and good trails.

we did the Gene-Marshall Piedra-Blanca Trail in August and there was still flowing water at all of the campgrounds.
