I was planning on hiking out of Murphy creek with my family on Oct 3rd for 3 days. Stay at May Lake, Glen Aulin, maybe down on Tenaya creek. However, Ive gotten some feedback that it will be too cold for a family trip up there and that theres too much risk that a freak storm will put us in a bad spot during October. What do you think?

We're staying within easy walking distance of the road. I dont mind some weather, and our gear is good to about freezing. I'm down for a little adventure, as is my family, as long as we can bail if things get dicey. In my experience, October has been a pretty nice time to be in the sierras, but maybe Ive just been lucky?

On the other hand, if theres very little chance that we will enjoy ourselves because we're too cold to play or lay around, then that wouldnt be good either. We do have warm clothes, but I'm counting on the fact that most of the day will actually be nice, and we'll mostly be bundled up mornings and evenings, sipping on hot cocoa.

what do you think? Am i better off just backing down and finding a decent low elevation hike and save this one for next year? Or is October actually a reasonably safe bet for a good family hike up there??

Cmon weather man. Help me out.

"our gear is good to about freezing"

You can get 3 feet of snow the first week of October… or you can get weather in the 70's. But when I go up high in Oct I like to have gear that is good down into the twenties … The forecast can call for lows of 30 and you can actually get lows in the twenties… or even high teens…

AS we've said before here… watch the weather forecast and have another option in mind if the weather is not what you want.

And how old are your kids? I wouldn't risk it with little kids.

As you go up in altitude, you go up in risk from bad weather.

Australian Xmas is mid-summer, and you may have heard about our summers. I have had sleet in the mountains on Boxing Day. Yeah, and a lot of tourists were in some trouble too!

Cheers
