Hi,

I'm planning on hiking the JMT next August with two friends; all of us are average size (5' 9" ish) guys in our 50's.

My current tents are a BA Slide Mountain SL3 (6 lbs 9 oz) and SD Half Moon 2 (5 lbs 4 oz). While the Slide Mountain is nice and roomy it's much heavier than what I want to carry.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Peter

We had 3 and a dog on the Chilkoot Trail this summer and a 9×9 Oware pyramid did the job well. I'm sold on the pyramids for almost all of our trips now. Lots of different pyramid tents available.

Oware Pyramid

EDIT: With guy lines, bug netting, and seam sealed it comes in at 2lbs. Not bad for 3.

I wouldn't share tent , too many drawbacks IMO. What if someone needs to bail? They don't have a shelter to carry with them.

Share a tent with wife, kids, or other family member. Buddies bring their own. Otherwise, you are wed to them essentially, and stuff happens.

^^ agree. Plus it is sometime easier to find 2-3 small spots than one big spot. You're going to be with these guys a lot, sometimes a spot of your own is a good thing. Shifting around, getting up in the night, getting dressed etc. all made more complicated when you're all bumping into each other.

met a pair on the Long trail that had started with 3 and they had packed their food in bulk for 3 and one bailed so they were still stuck carrying an extra guy's food.

being self sufficient is a good idea.

One report I remember seeing a few years ago was of three guys that had a 3 person tent and a solo as well.
In turns one would sleep in the solo but they used the three person as a meeting tent.
A CB3 and a Notch or Contrail (or similar set up from other brands) would be around 5 lbs in total, but split so that one could do his own thing if necessary.

Thank you everyone for you advice!!

You have convinced me that my buddies and I should go with individual shelters instead of a single three person shelter. Now I need to decide what one person shelter – TT Notch, Zpacks Hexamid Solplex. Hmm?

Have one of your buddies get the Notch and you get the Solplex – or vis versa.
