I guess I must have been lucky a few years back because I picked up a Montbell Alpine Down jacket pretty cheap on a close out at Prolitegear. I have liked the jacket because it was a big light box baffled bundle of warmth but I didn’t like it so much because it didn’t have a hood, it could use a smidge more length in the arms and torso and the outer fabric was 20 or 30 dernier. So lately I have thought about getting another model to try something that would have the same amount of loft and warmth but with some of the features I was looking for. I tried some OR and other brand stuff but it didn’t really pan out. I just tried some RAB stuff but the Microlight and Neutrino Endurance were a bit too small in XXL. What really shocked me was that the Neutrino Endurance Plus in XL was large enough but the jacket weighed close to two pounds, 30.3oz, and didn’t seem to have nowhere near the loft of the Montbell I have (6oz down, 20oz total weight) even thought it was supposed to have 10oz of hydrophobic down in it. The sewing of the baffles had a variety of height to them from near nonexistant to maybe about half an inch so although the jacket maybe had a lot more down in it, there was no real huge loft to make the down work to its fullest. And it is not just this RAB piece but a lot of the jackets that I have tried out that are box baffled just don’t have baffles that loft that much. I also really don't like that most the hooded jackets that have 4-5oz of down usually weight between 17-18oz in XXL.

Since I mainly wanted a jacket/parka for the winter to use around town and as an insulating layer if I do go out winter camping (very rarely) maybe I will just save the Montbell and buy a down hood and be done with it.

I did like the Mountain Hardwear hooded Ghost Whisperer I tried out with the other stuff I ordered but where do you use this that you just can’t use a 200wt fleece?

Check the Montbell Mirage. Lighter, hood, box baffle. Their ballistic nylon is thin/light but super tough.

My xl Plus is 28.2oz, did you weigh yours with the tags?

I second the Mirage.

Possibly, still alot though. Mirage would be nice but they don't make it in an XXL anymore and the price is pretty steep.

I think the Montbell Outlet had a few XXLs left a few weeks ago but I didn't jump on them fast enough.

Given your size restrictions, have you considered a custom order?
I'd give Borah Gear a call and see what they could do.
GooseFeet Gear doesn't list a jacket, but do make down pants and balaclavas and have a bit of a history of doing custom work.

I think the quotes I got were $400+ which is well out of my price range.

I called Sierra Designs also and asked them about their box baffled DriDown jacket and they said it was NOT like the Michelin Man style and that the baffles were only about an inch and a quarter thick.

It does when I am just wearing a base layer but it gets a bit tight on the sides when I put on an R2 underneath it. Only thing to fit so far is the hooded MH Ghost Whisperer in XXL but I am trying to think what to use it for.

It's a tough market for Godzilla sized hikers. I was pretty bummed to see that Montbell has discontinued carrying XXL as the Mirage and the new Anorak were on my hit list.

I exchanged emails with Borah about a custom XXL sweater. They were willing to discuss it but I ended up nixing the project. You may want to contact Luke's Ultralite as well to see if you can work out something with them.

At first I thought that Montbell was out of the XXL market but fortunately I was wrong.

One thing that continues to be true is that XXL has been and still is only available in limited colors. After selecting gray, it turns out the ex light Anorak is available in XXL.

The XXL mirage is still listed but sold out (in every size) in Navy. Give it a couple months and I'm sure it'll return.

It might be worth asking Montbell to measure the Xl Mirage, I have a Large and it fits the same as my Xl permafrost and old Xl Ex light.

Thanks, I will check into that. It would also be nice if they were much less expensive.

I am sure it is but I already own a Montbell XXL Alpine Down Jacket at 20oz and would only need a good hood for about $70.

I have a Ghost Whisperer, and I am so incredibly disappointed with the loft that I'm just returning it and buying another Stoic Down Pullover before they are gone forever. It fits amazing and is so sleek and great for around town, but with it's lack of loft compared to other jackets, "around town" just doesn't justify the $269 price tag for me (got it on sale).

In a way a hood is more versatile. I like a hood on my puffy for when wearing it walking around, but sleeping a separate hood is nicer I think. If you are already ok torso wise in for example a fleece or baselayer under your quilt/bag, you can still pair it with your separate down hood. Sometimes you just want the one without the other. So if you have a nice fitting Alpine jacket, it is in good condition and you like it, you might as well just keep using it.

I agree with Justin,. My experience with MH's 3 season down bag low loft was so d@mn disappointing that I returned it and (thankfully) got a WM Megalite.

My avatar shows my Eddie Bauer Down Sweater. Love it. I think they still make it.
