Went out for a 5 day trip to the central Winds last week with my dog Buddy. The weather didn't cooperate but we still had a good time. Especially Buddy. Wet and cold is his comfort zone. Unfortunately, the weather didn't make for great pics. Went out of the horribly named Scab Creek TH.

Started around 3 on Sunday and made it to Little Divide Lake. Started raining with a couple of miles to go and rained most of the night. Between the rain and wind/cold, we only had one night that we hung out outside of the shelter when we got to camp.

View to the east of Middle Fork Lake. Rained again on the way there and that night. We were just getting ready to leave camp when 2 young guys doing the WRHR came blasting though. They were having a great time and really raving about it. And it was nice that after 5 days out, the mosquitoes left when they arrived. :)

We didn't have any rain this day but plenty of hail.

From there we went cross country to Halls Lake

Camp at Standpoint Lake. This is in the morning. Really cold and windy the night before so it was pitch the SL3 and get in as soon as we got there and got a bear bag rope hung.

We were supposed to go out the next day but when we got back to Little Divide Lake it was 4, in the 30's and howling. Decided to book it back to the TH instead of spending another 14+ hours in the shelter. We'd already seen this part anyway.

It was a good choice. Brewmaster Burger at Wind River Brewing in Pinedale.

I was also able to pick up a souvenir to bring back for my wife while I was at WRB.

WRB ale

Turns out she doesn't like beer. Huh. Oh well, it's the thought that counts!

"Turns out she doesn't like beer. Huh. Oh well, it's the thought that counts!"

Reminds me of a Simpsons episode where Homer gives Marge a bowling ball for her birthday, already inscribed "Homer."

Nice trip report, too!

Thanks for the report. I have that area on my to do list for next summer's trip. I might hit you up for advise before I go if you don't mind.

Thanks

Ben

Good looking trip Randy. Looks like you couldn't escape our really familiar summer weather!

Glad to see that Buddy had a good time too… Lucky pup!

Thanks guys. Feel free to PM anytime Ben (or anyone for that matter) if you need to trail beta.

You're sure right about the weather Tim. What a strange year overall although anything can happen anytime in the Rockies. At least there was no lightning on this trip!

Sorry you had to go in at Scab Creek…my least favorite entry point. I was on much of the WRHR the first week of Sept and didn't experience any bugs – I am suprised they came back for the other guys on their way out.

Seems like the weather hasn't changed much as we had only one night out of 9 that didn't rain/sleet/snow and have the wind howl all day and most of the night. Our two coldest nights hit 10f and 12f and we had only really prepared for 30f or so at night and wore only shorts during the day with wind pants over them in the evening. Sleep fine but had to button things up and wear my down hood for sleeping.

Middle Fork is one of my favorite basins – especially the route south over the trailess pass to Bonneville basin and then over the trailess pass at Bonneville pass to Pyramid Lake. From there it is a great walk over the again trailess pass that heads east from the lake to the pass that is above Haley Pass. From there you drop down to Haley pass and head up off trail to Baptiste Lake and back over the divide west.

Nice trip report….I wish I was still up there!

Thanks Guys. I know what you mean now John. Scab Creek trail was the worst trail I've ever been on. Looked like this most of the way. Horses had torn it up pretty good. And the worse part was you could see tracks as the horses went around the already wide mud pits they had created. Pretty nasty.

Looks like a nice trip.
I did a 90 mile northbound from about South Pass from Hwy 28 along
the CDT up to Elkhart Park in early August. The last day out to Elkhart
the trail looked worse than that in the rain. It was a mix of mud, horse and Llama
crap and very slick. All the way from Photographer's Point to the TH.

Made me doubly glad to make it down to Pinedale and a few beers and a big burger
at the Wind River Brew pub.

Here is how the trail looked on August 28, 2010 after one inch of rainfall in a 24 hour period. Apparently the animal traffic makes a huge difference.
