This was my inaugural attempt at combining running w/ a overnight, figured I might as well throw in a little fishing too! There aren’t too many packs out that are geared for overnighters and running, Montane recently came out w/ their Dragon 20, so I bought one. No need to tell you that your kit has to be pretty dialed in to fit everything into a 20l pack. I recently purchased a MLD eVENT bivy which simplified the shelter situation. A pad (actually two this trip as the temps really fell, it was 27F at 8:00 AM at the trailhead, the lakes I was visiting were between 8-9000′!), down quilt, small cook kit, clothing and a few essentials rounded out the kit, oh and my fishing rod :)

climbing, looks like November!

the wind was blowing hard at the pass and they got enough snow it already started forming a small cornice

I caught four nice cutthroat before I started heading down the other side (no cutthroat were hurt in the filming of this movie!)

I should mention that I saw several helicopters, there is a missing hunter from last Sunday- I’m afraid with the turn in the weather there isn’t much of a chance. Looking down the drainage.

Had some really good running down the drainage, the little Montane really carries nicely. Next destination is Moose Lake where I’ll setup camp.

I caught a dandy rainbow in pretty short order and augmented my supper w/ it. That’s my homemade 1 ounce grill.

with a bivy, setting up camp is a breeze :)

that evening I had two bull elk bugling, but I think they were far enough apart I don’t think there was going to be any dueling. I woke up in the night w/ a pretty bright moon and coyotes singing a chorus. I’m guessing the temps fell into the mid to upper 20’s, pushing my 30 degree quilt a bit, but I was pretty cozy-albeit w/ all the clothing I brought on!

a small fire and a cup of coffee is a great way to start out the day

the lake was perfectly still and got this nice reflection shot

had several good running miles before I had to hump it back up to the pass, bumped into these guys on the way

it was great to combine three of my great loves- backpacking, trail running and fishing, life is grand!

I never thought I'd see running and fishing combined- they are such diametrically opposite disciplines- but I like it. Awesome!

looks like Great fun Mike.
even I would have brought a stove on that trip, brrrr.
ditto what Craig said, 105* here and indoors all day trying to stay cool.
no Grizzly Bears ??

those are some pretty big bottles on front of your pack.
is that pack designed for this or is that your own addition ?

thanks folks! Art-I brought a small esbit stove that I used to boil water, fire works better for fish :)

it's a new pack from Montane- Dragon 20- specifically designed for multi-day trips, it's a dandy- more discussion in the SUL forum on this pack (and also UD's new Fastpack); the bottles are 1/2 liter each and the system holding them is genius

Gorgeous and fun report! 20L seems soooo tiny…. Wow.

But I'm re-thinking my choice of a 40L in order to "do everything". While I'm still working my way down the scale maybe I need to be at 30L and keep refining as I am able to spend money to go smaller and lighter.

Would you do JMT or something similar (5-8 days-ish) with the same gear?

I like your style buddy. get after it. i hope to be cooking trout this weekend. never occurred to me to combine it with running. awesome!

thanks all

Andrea- probably same gear, but would definitely need a larger pack for the additional food- I think 4 days/three nights would be the very most I could squeeze out of this pack. I'm not familiar enough w/ the logistics of the JMT, but if there are options for re-supply, then it probably could be done w/ this pack

it's rumored that UD (Ultimate Direction) is coming out w/ a 30 liter running pack this winter, with 30 liters I think I could get into the 5-7 day range

this trip it was pretty cold, so in more moderate weather I could dump the down jacket in favor of a down vest, could nix the Cap 4 tops/bottoms, nix the the thinlight pad, that would allow additional room for food as well

Adan- nice to hear from you, good luck on your trout hunting! You and Craig should plan a vacation out this way, I'd me more than happy to play guide if you guys came out :)

Mike
